Some new texture conversion batch files

Featured Replies

Here are some new batch files for those of you that are doing the texture conversions. The attached file contains 3 batch files.Blank Bump - This replaces the bump map textures in the main Texture and SceneryGlobalTexture folders with very small blank bump map textures. This has pretty much the same effect as deleting the bump maps, but deleting them can cause other problems so this should be better.Blank Specular - This does the same thing with Specular files.Autogen Buildings 50% - This one reduces the size of autogen buildings, roofs, terminals, hangars, etc.Do not try these unless you have first backed up your textures. I've tried these on my machine only and have not done extensive testing. I'm sure some people will find more use out of these than others. Please let me know if you find any problems or if they help or not.Instructions on how to use these is here http://www.fox-fam.com/wordpress/?page_id=41 (they work exactly like my other bat files)http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/160027.zip

Matt,I tried your batch files and indeed, I gained a few FPS! At Seattle, 3000 feet, facing downtown buildings with harbour I had 18-21 FPS, now between 22-24.Everything maxed except all traffic at 0, water High 1x. Blank specular and bump files seem to work just fine, night lighting is still there, road traffic as well. Thanks a lot, Matt! :)I'll test some more, of course, but so far it looks really promising. Now to hunt for the rest of the big files... ;)These ones I reduced also, they are used a lot:taxi_tranm.ddsAirportParkingSpace.ddsAirportHangars_Small.ddsAirportHangars_Small_lm.ddsAirportHangars_Medium_lm.ddsAirportHangars_Medium.ddsAirportHangars_Large_lm.ddsAirportHangars_Large.ddsRegards,Jure

Matt, are the blank files that are being substituted already part of the default install?

>Matt, are the blank files that are being substituted already>part of the default install?Yes, MS uses this trick also for a lot of their textures, so I just took one of their blank files and copied it over under different file names.Matt

Hangars are in there. I left the other two out intentionally. I tried to leave the DXT5 textures alone.

Thank you!Just to make things clear for me, are these files compatible with the other batch files I have already applied:reduced_autogen_AG.zipreduced_autogen_BLD.zipreduced_autogen_misc.zipAutogenGroundConvert.zipand the BAT files in your previous BATCH file collection included with "BatchFiles1.zip"One of the first mods I applied soon after installing all of these mods was the DXT5 ---> DXT1 conversion. Is it compatible with this new autogen files?Thx!

Does anyone here know for sure if using the 'Autogen Buildings 50%.bat' in this new file breaks Multiplayer compatibility?Cheers, and thank you Matt!Jim

Jim,multiplayer is ok now. It was genfresnel.dds. Once I put back the original, unmodified file, I was able to start FSX in multiplayer mode. It isn't present in Matt's new batch files.Jure

Hi Matt,First of all, this thread gives me the opportunity to thank you for these bat files which have eased this conversion and I'm very grateful for that. Before using these new ones, I just would like to understand why when I tried the previous ones a few days ago, several files had not been converted, only they had been resized into 512 X 512 and I noticed an alteration of their format, what was confirmed by Imagetool displaying an error message stating that these files were corrupted.I then downloaded DDS converter which repaired them and I was able to save them in DXT1 format by using Imagetool in a command line after all.Regards,Vincent Mellinger

So if the original texture was 1024x1024, the resized ones would be 512x512, if the original was 256x256, the new one would be 128x128. I can't think of any reason why some would not resize unless it was a typo on my part. I have to manually enter the new size of each texture so it's possible that I missed a couple.I also try to keep them the same format as the original. So if the original texture was dds then the new one would be dds, if the original was bmp then new one would be bmp. Imagetool has a bug where it can not read dds textures that it creates in batch mode, so that is why Imagetool is reporting them as corrupted. But they still work fine in FSX. Not sure of any way around that unless there is another freeware program that can convert to DDS with mip maps with command line batch commands that I'm not aware of.If there are any textures that you notice not converting or converting incorrectly, please let me know.

There were some errors with those that have been corrected with the batch files.I would not recommending using any of the tweaks that recommend converting everything to DXT1. That could cause some weird issues. Probably best to keep them in the same format, which is what the batch files do.Matt

Matt! You just gave me something to do this night instead of going multiplayer and ruining an otherwise amenable experience for the others....;-)

Matt,just 1 more thing... Should I still use the modified "autogenDescriptions.sbp" dated 2006-10-8 ?
