Salute to our Missing Man - "Spike" 610 Squadron

Here is our ACG video in rememberence of Spike from No.610 Squadron.

His life was all about his family and his love of flight.

I somehow feel that I missed out on chatting with him. His passing was a particular shock to the members of No.610 but also to the rest of ACG as well and it goes without saying that he will be sadly missed.

Symbolically, it is a journey from the sea to the land and onwards to the clouds, filled with the sounds of the English countryside in summer. The journey takes us past a chiming church to an airfield where the breeze is gently catching the windsock. The empty hangar and lack of aircraft reflects the fact that the bond of the men who form the squadron are away - although as the twelth chime rings out the sound of the merlins can be heard approaching...

The missing man salute concludes with the lone Spitfire disappearing into the light of the sun - meaning a joining with the deity for the religiously minded.

Created for the VE Day celebrations in May 2020. Unfortunately Covid19 stopped them in their tracks!

At least we had a great VE day street party in the cul-de-sac where I live. Great weather, all of us out in our front yards/gardens. I have an RC 1/10th scale Land Rover, so I hurriedly attached a couple of Union Jacks on straws to it so we even had a "parade" LOL!🍻

Absolutely brilliant shipmate!

My wife gave me this as a Christmas gift a couple of years ago.

The back plate has been cast from what was left of the Merlin engine from Ray Holmes Hurricane, TM-B, 504 Squadron.

After running out of ammunition he rammed a Dornier Do17 heading for central London. Slicing off its tail, Ray bailed out, landing in a dustbin.

TM-B crashed not far from Buckingham Palace, and was dug up in 2004 with Ray in attendance.

Here are some of the AI (non-flyable) aircraft in Cliffs of Dover. Or at least some flyables in different squadron skins (the Blenheims, Beaufighters and Tiger Moths for example).

These were scripted into the various campaign missions that we all flew on a Sunday evening (some times there were almost 100 people flying RAF / Luftwaffe). Good times.

The Wellington is now flyable in Cliffs of Dover "Torbruk".

Whenever I saw the Defiants flying in formation, I gave my thanks.

As another piece of trivia. Mary Ellis said "The Supmarine Walrus was the worse aeroplane she ever flew" I bet a few downed RAF pilots floating in the English Channel, picked up by one, would disagree!

Flying with ACG

A typical Battle of Britain Campaign as flown by the Air Combat Group. Created by Thaine (ACG Member)

"Stunningly brilliant! This captures so well what we are about. I've watched it several times already. The editing is extremely well done and really brings together the action superbly. To think that this is just one area of action as well... I remember sitting in control with Donkey and sweating with the workload (which can ramp up rapidly) - and you don't always realise everything that is going - on so it is great to see it shown like this."

It does go on for over an hour!

My very 1st attempt at treating myself to gauges and switches. The BFP was provided by the game, and displayed on an old touchscreen in the middle of my panel.

I had a rush of word not allowed to the brain, and tried to use the loft space.

My gunsight. Made from bits & bobs, bicycle gear wheels, faux-leather covering. Oval sight glass as used during the BoB. Pilots at the time were complaining that the Oval distorted the reticule.

The glass is perspex. The label was knocked up in MS Publisher, printed to photo paper, then laminated.

I covered the crash pad in faux-leather (£3 off Amazon). People today are telling me how it aged well.

Scale done using a Red and White paint pen (another £3 off Amazon).

About November 1940, the square sight glass was born.

Another view trying to show the optics - round piece of glass. Underneath were a few layers of plastic milk bottle. Cut in a circle "milkying" the view inside.

The ruler was there because an RAF mate was knocking up a "transit box" for me. I am ex-Navy, so just knew this wasn't going to be mates rates!

Here is the box he made up (still charged me for it though)!

Clips are very modern, although you can't see them with the lid open.

I ended up splashing the cash, and getting the genuine article (twice - don't ask)!
