Airliners first impression

That would be a bit silly. Even the best study level payware airliners in P3D have the option to start with all systems up and running.

If there's a way to start a flight at the gate/ramp with the engines running in any plane, I haven't found it yet. You either start parked, cold and dark, or you start on a runway with everything running.

I too am disappointed with the 747 and 787. Though I suspect a lot of that is that I've been spoiled by PMDG and Qualitywings in P3d. I have no expectation that the 747 will be brought up to PMDG standards. It might be nice if the 787 were brought up to Qualitywings level, but I have my doubts on that as well.

To the OP point about 748 leveling off mid altitude. Do you think it’s a weight issue and it’s not able to climb at that constant vertical speed? Maybe you should taper down the V/s as you climb. 787 and a320 may not see this problem as much as the jumbo.

I dont know if it is weight related. Seems more like it is the AP being too generic and not specific with the limits of the airframe. It makes the plane ocillate, and the trim isn't able to catch up to the inputs of the ap. On my flight the 748 was pretty light.

Glad it's not just me having issues with the 747 VS. Seems to have a mind of its own - dial in the standard 1800 FPM and it will vary between about 300 and 3000 FPM on a climb. Dialling in a lower altitude then a descent rate it went down a bit (again at variable speed) then just continued flying level (HOLD was off and VS was on). When I tried to hand-fly down it felt like the aircraft was pushing back and resisting any attempt to descend.

Well, MSFS is very silly then in that regard.  If you start at a gate or parking in default aircraft, it's cold and dark.  No choice.  If you want it up and running, you have to start on the runway.  The mod Richard was asking about is the ongoing NX "fly by wire" mod to the default a320 and they haven't done anything with that default functionality yet (if it's even possible in a default aircraft).  While it's hopeful that the payware stuff will be able to do things like start at a gate with systems running, the reality is especially since there's no SDK yet, we don't really know what the sim actually allows in that regard.  It could very well be that Asobo has made it so anything not starting on a runway starts cold/dark unless we push hard enough to get that changed.
