Strange issue with LOD radius.

Featured Replies

I am doing a trans Europe/Asia flight in the TBM with a friend which we have been doing for about a week now.  A great experience in this sim without any doubt.    But yesterday, we crossed into Afghanistan.  A strange thing happened with the LOD radius.  Immediately around our aircraft and up to the distance where the LOD should be high resolution elevation data and texture detail, everything defaulted to base, low resolution textures and elevation data.  In effect, it was FSX default scenery.  However, beyond the LOD radius border, everything was high detail and resolution.   You could see the high detail mountain elevation mesh and texturing in the distance, but you could never get to it.   We basically were flying in a low resolution bubble.  We both experienced the same thing at the same time.  Wondering whether this is a glitch with the way data is loading in this part if the world or whether it was a general server issue.  We were unable to find anyone else reporting this issue.

Has anyone else experienced this?

Erich

Yes.  Around Lake Natron in Africa.  It was very strange.  I saw tiles disappearing behind me and being laid down in front of me in a very short radius around the aircraft.

I call it 'Wallace and Gromit effect', but unless you have seen the British animated movie where they are on the train, and ripping up rail track behind them to put down in front of the train, you might not get it! 🙂

Also the lake had a line through it as the satellite imagery is of different qualities, but we have to allow for that of course, not MS/Asobos fault.

The LOD thing must be a bug.  I went to Canada afterwards though, and it completely cleared up.

Rob (but call me Bob or Rob, I don't mind).

I like to trick airline passengers into thinking I have my own swimming pool in my back yard by painting a large blue rectangle on my patio.

Thanks for your input.  I'm going to try the same flight again and see if it does the same thing.  Its the only time it has ever happened.

There are also times, especially doing long stretches, where you do see photographic image join lines, but that is very easily overlooked, as the general immersion provided by the scenery is quite exceptional compared to former repetitive landclass models.

I agree!  👍

For all its issues at the moment, I won't be going back to anything else.

Me neither,.

This type of LOD issue we are talking about (Bubble around the aircraft) may be a transient problem due to the code tripping over itself after a period of time, or a specific location issue.

If you can remember where it was in Afghanistan, I will try that area myself tonight.  I will also try Lake Natron again, as since then (well over a week ago) I have not seen the issue since in any other location.

If it is repeatable, I will put a notification on Zendesk for MS/Asobo.

Great!

Herat (OAHR) - Kabul ( OAKB)

Kabul (OAKB) - Jalalabad ((OAJL)

First leg was at 20,000ft, second leg at 10,000ft in the TBM

I guess it was just a glitch on the day but will be interesting to hear your feedback . I won’t be able to retest it until tomorrow

Just edit the cfg file and turn up terrain_LOD to 4 or 5.

Did you actually read what he wrote or do you simply put your line into each thread that has "LOD" somewhere in it? *facepalm*

That is great for global LOD issues, and I turn it up to 2.5 myself, but I don't think that is the issue Erich is referring to here.

There seems to be certain areas where the scenery pops in and out quite severely (more like the actual tile/satellite image than buildings/trees), and these aren't 'busy' areas either like cities where you might expect a performance issue.

It is way more extreme than the standard LOD issue, which isn't much of a problem for me actually, or certainly doesn't trouble me.  We may be looking at separate terrain loading issue that may need reporting.

MS/Asobo are already working on the general LOD regression - I have confidence they will fix that.

😁 He was only trying to help I think, but seems to misunderstand the issue! 👍
