A good monitor for flight simulation is....

Featured Replies

Hello everyone,

I already read a lot that forum part and I know that there is no "good" answer to that question. That is why I am trying to find the monitor that will fit my needs and I would really appreciate some recommandation. And here they are:

- UWQHD => 3440*1440p

- No more than 100Hz since I am not a hardcore gamer (I mean else than flight simulation) and that I doubt my PC being able to go above 60fps even with the new GPUs...

- FreeSync

- At around 500€/500$

I am quite unsure about the importance of the response time for flight simulation.

I already identified some monitors and if you have any experience of them I would appreciate your feedback :

AOC 34" LED - CU34G2X/BK - https://www.ldlc.com/fiche/PB00286039.html

Gigabyte 34" LED - G34WQC - https://www.ldlc.com/fiche/PB00371592.html

I've heard alot of positive on the Fox Spirit monitor, but it can be had for alot less money, I saw it as low as 349€, I'd recommend waiting for Black Friday deals

@Tristan Letri, if you're certain you want a 21:9 display the best bet is to read the reviews for each monitor you've listed. Don't read Amazon reviews, read those on www.tomshardware.com, www.techradar.com and pcmonitors.info.

They will give you unbiased good quality reviews. Mainstream manufacturers such as Samsung, BenQ, Dell, Philips tend to be the best monitors. IPS are the highest quality followed by VA and finally TN which are best avoided.

Make sure the monitor you choose can support 30Hz. That will give excellent fluidity in your chosen sim.

Your remark on the 30Hz is interesting. I am a noob in monitors, but why would >100Hz monitors not support 30 Hz ? Is this information given in the product details ?

I also heard that the VA are recommanded for Flight Simulation, what is your opinion ?

Not all monitors are capable of running at 30Hz even if they can support 100Hz or greater. You should check the resolution and refresh rates usually found on the manufacturers website in the user guide near the end.

IPS are the best quality panels with VA next and TN lowest quality. VA should be okay but again, check independent reviews for image quality.

I fully concur w/ Ray's recommendation to be sure whatever you buy supports 30Hz which is a most effective means to get smooth performance at 30fps.  Someone might chime in here to describe w/ empirical proof (at least to themselves) that a true Gsync or Freesync monitor offers identical performance when set at or near 30fps.  I would also strongly recommend a curved 3440x1440 screen it just seems to be very well suited to flight simulation.  And absolutely--not all do support 30Hz refresh rate so go to the manufacturer's website, or Bestbuy I think has them, and look at the user manual for that screen to find out for sure.   I accidentally slopped into my 30Hz capable screen not knowing just how useful this is for Prepar3D or MSFS.

Had no idea that 30hz was best for 30fps. Based on the source (Ray) I’m not questioning it but am curious as to why.

edit: it would seem then that I don’t have to worry about higher hz and associated cost unless I need it in another game/app?

Simple really. P3D is sending out 30 refreshes a second. If you have your monitor set to receive more than that what’s the point? It’s just refreshing the same info.

By syncing the monitor refresh rate to the output from P3D you get the smoothest performance. In P3D you need to set frame rates to unlimited and VSync on. That means P3D will output no more fps than the monitor can receive. That lowers demand on the CPU and GPU so no stutters unless you’re in a very dense area or your settings are too high.

The key is to make sure CPU1 never hits 100%. Reduce settings until it remains below 100%.

With other games 60Hz should be fine but check the maximum refresh rate before buying if you’re playing games that can deliver 100+fps. P3D never will.

The same holds true for MSFS, except you can set frame rate to 60 in-sim, vsync on, as there is no 'UNLIMITED' like there is in FSX/P3D.  Apparently setting to 60 acts the same as UNLIMITED does in FSX/P3D and the evidence for that is that the main thread in MSFS typically runs around 45-55% w/ nearly all settings at ULTRA depending.
