Changes in official packages trigger redowloading updates

Featured Replies

There was small 1 GB navdata update yesterday. It went fine for me. However, immediattely after the 1 GB update ca. 26 GB also started downloading. I discovered that the propable reason was my manual edit of one of the files in the ...\Packages\Official\Steam path (I use Steam version). It was a tree height fix (10-asobo_species.xml).

I stopped the update, restored the Packages from my backup copy (from the morning, before the navdata update), replaced the modified 10-asobo_species.xml with the original one. The sim downloaded the 1GB navdata update and not attempted to download the 26 GB update again.

Conclusion: If you change anything in the official packages, it may trigger redownloading some parts of the sim. This (AFAIK) does not aplly to the packages in the Community folder. So if you have some mods in the official packages, remove/replace it before update.

P.S.

Having a daily incremental backup is nice, I can restore the sim to any state after the release. It saved me redownloading the entire sim once (when I accidentally launched the Steam integrity check) and now the 2nd time. Great time saver if you have 5Mbps Internet link.

I modify my tree heights with a freeware tree height tool that saves new versions of the tree files in the community folder.

Does this pertain to ANY file in the Official folder? I normally make the change to the 2 files to get ATC to call the TBM, TBM. I have also now changed the PID value in the AI file to get the TBM to follow the ILS better.

Where to look for this tool? Does it allow to edit tree size as you wish (I need the trees bigger to extend the tree draw distance)?

If the changes are in an airplane folder, you may be OK.. No guarantees..
