December 16, 20205 yr Hi guys, I am currently making a backup of MSFS using the Steam backup function. Tomorrow I will build a new PC and hopefully I won't have to redownload the entire 148 GB. Did anybody try it before? Tomorrow I will let you know... wish me luck ๐ Cheers 7800X3D | 2x32 GB DDR5-6000 CL32 | RTX 5080 | Alienware OLED 34" | 1 Gbps fiberย
December 16, 20205 yr I am interested to hear how this goes, but since the Steam 'verify file integrity' option causes the entire sim to re-install itself, I am also skeptical of it working. Let us know how it goes! AMD 3950X | 64GB RAM | AMD 5700XT | CH Fighterstick / Pro Throttle / Pro Pedals
December 16, 20205 yr Unfortunately, I don't think this is going to work. From Steam Support regarding the backup tool: Note: Many games that use third party installers or downloaders will not work with Steam's backup feature. This includes many MMO style or third party free to play titles. Only games that completely download, install, and patch through Steam are compatible with this tool. What I would suggest to avoid having the download the entire thing is to copy the "Official" folder (and the community folder, if you wish)ย to an external drive. Once the new PC is built,ย Win10 and Steam client installed and configured, start the MSFS installation from the Steam client. When it gets to the part where it begins to download the main files (the big download) stop the installation and exit MSFS. Copy the "Official" folder from the external drive to the new "Official" folder on the PC. Once the copy is complete, start MSFS again. It should see that everything it wants is in the "Official" folder and should not try to download everything again. Even so, once MSFS is up and running, do not forget to check the "Content Manager" for anything that might be missing. Hope that helps, ...jim ย ASUS Prime Z790-E, Intel i9 13900K, 32Gb DDR5 Ram,ย Nvidia 3090 24Gb, Samsung 970 EVO Plus 500 GB and 1 TB, Samsung Odyssey G9ย Ultrawide 49" G-SYNC Monitor.
December 16, 20205 yr It will definitely *not* work.ย All that will be backed up is the steam front end for the sim.ย The big download isn't done in Steam at all--it's done in the application itself from the Azure cloud, not from Steam's servers. The solution Jim Brown posted above works, although I made it a point to be sure to use the same drive and file path as the old installation, as I know MSFS saves some config data in the cloud that *might* reference the path...not sure if that's necessary or not, but it definitely worked without a hitch when done that way. My experience has been that using the same drive/path is not required. However, this is with the Steam version. I have no knowledge of what happens with the MS Store version. December 17, 20205 yr Author Thank you guys, I will do the copy instead. In fact I suspected that it may not work, I selected MSFS and Fallout 76 (which alone should be around 60 GB) and the total of the backup is 88 GB. Will let you know later.
