FSDT KDFW strange blocks on taxiways (P3D5)

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I've got these strange blocks on the taxiways at FSDT's KDFW. Anyone got any ideas? I've tried reinstalling, to no effect.

Thanks,

What taxiway/runway or gate is it artifacting?

It looks like the Yankee or Zulu taxiway at the north end of the airport. That would be terminal A off to the right.

Look like the MESH complexity setting, see in the manual what the recommended setting is

You should be using a mesh texture setting of 5 m.  And even then, I've seen a few small bumps sticking up at their KIAH and over at FB's KDEN.

What setting do most people use generally?

I'm a v4.5 user here, so apologies if I'm butting-in to a v5 exclusive discussion, but I personally stick with 10m mesh complexity to avoid running into the annoying invisible wall bug. This is a known issue in 4.5, so it would not surprise me to see it continue with v5. The issue and workaround is well documented in the following link; it primarily impacts large aircrafts on certain runways/surfaces near elevation changes (DFW taxiway bridges, KSFO 28L/R) with maxed out mesh complexity.

I've only seen this issue at FSDT's KDFW though...

What terrain mesh resolution are you using? I really think the solution here is to consider lowering this setting.

When I set my mesh resolution to 1m, I can replicate your issue: https://i.imgur.com/pgY3aJd.png

When I set that to 5m, the issue is no longer there: https://i.imgur.com/7HVvsdm.png

Again, I personally use 10m - which some may consider conservative - but I find it to be a good balance between mesh detail and functioning airports. In your sim, this bug might be the most visible at KDFW, but I'd bet you'll find this around any runway with varying elevation data in close proximity. Aerosoft's EGLL - for example - includes elevation data for the road tunnel underneath 09L/27R, and I have had my aircraft slam to the ground mid-rotation at the point of the tunnel when my terrain resolution is set too high. Hitting an invisible wall at YSSY or KSFO after a nice longhaul and approach can be infuriating.

Other airports that I am aware of this issue: KSFO/YSSY/KJFK (for the runways over water), EGLL/EHAM (for highway tunnel elevation data underneath the runways).

Looks like you have a 777 in your hangar. I recommend testing the bug by doing a few finals at KSFO 28L/R as that PMDG thread does, and I am fairly confident you'll replicate it with the terrain resolution set too high.

You need to use the mesh setting that the manual specifies for this airport due to the way it was constructed. As Dan mentioned in his post above yours, 5 m.

How much of a drop in quality will I see going from 1m to 5m?

I have to say that this MESH setting is really inconvenient since different airports require different settings. I also have issues in FB KPHX airport with different settings
