Using TrackIR for MSFS using control Buttons

Featured Replies

I have a Trackir  device installed and I can set the various functions such as "Centre", "Pause" and "Precision" working with keyboard controls in MSFS however, I would very much like to use these Trackir controls using buttons on my Hotas Warthog Cougar throttle or stick buttons rather than a keyboard. Can anyone let me know if this is possible and how to do it? I would be most grateful for a "How to".

As far as I'm aware, neither MSFS nor TrackIR natively support what you want to do, so you'll need 3rd party software that lets you assign a controller button as a keypress.

FSUIPC is probably the most straightforward program for this (and it has a lot of other functions as well), but it is payware.

As far as freeware, I think the TARGET script editor from Thrustmaster (I'm not 100% sure it supports the Cougar) can do that, but it's spectacularly user-unfriendly. AntiMicro is another freeware option that's significantly easier to use, and I believe there's also some other freeware programs that do the same, thing, but I can't speak for any of them personally.

There's also a program called joytokey that should also work, which has a free trial, and is only $7 if you decide you like it.

Run the TrackIR.exe. And have it working

Under Advanced Settings on the Profile tab.

Action > choose Center, Precision or Pause

Click the rectangle below Key

Choose whatever key you want on your joystick.

Repeat for the other two.

Go fly.

Thanks, It's a start I have already selected my keys, used them in FSX and Prep3D and they work but I don't want to use the keyboard I want them on my TM warthog buttons so how do I get them into MSFS I note that their is a section on TrackIR in MSFS controls but I don't know how to use it to pass the keys onto TrackIR.

Assuming you have relatively recent TrackIR software, start the TrackIR software and select whatever profile you're using for MSFS. You don't need MSFS or anything else running, but you do need the Warthog to be plugged in.

When you have the profile selected, under the "advanced settings" section (click the arrow to the right of "advanced settings" if you don't have that menu visible), go to the "profiles" tab, and there should be a section labeled "HotKeys" that lets you assign a hotkey for center, pause, precision, or profile.

Select the action you want to assign, and then click the grey rectangle under "key", which should show whatever keyboard key you assigned to that action.

Clicking that should generate a popup box saying "HotKey Entry" and "enter desired button or hotkey for (whatever action)". When you see that popup, simply press whatever button you want to use for that command on the Warthog, and the box should disappear, with "Joystick(some number)" showing up as the key.

As far as I can tell, TrackIR should let you assign pretty much any of the buttons or toggles on a Warthog stick or throttle, except for the slider on the throttle, the hat switch on the stick, or the hat on the front of the left throttle.

Why doesn't the steps outlined by Twenty6 above work -- did you try it?  Open TrackIR, in the Hotkeys section select Center for the action, then click the Key box and when the Hot Key entry window opens, push the BUTTON on the Warthog you want to operate the TrackIR Center function.  Does that not work? I don't use a Warthog controller, but was able to assign a controller BUTTON in this way. You don't even need the sim running when doing this. Or am I not understanding something?  Note I think you should also select the Enable, Select and Trap boxes (Trap means TrackIR will capture the button action so the sim will never see it).

EDIT: I see ndts already posted essentially the same info above.

My fault. I used "key" when I should have said "button" or "switch" on your joystick. What I outlined above will work for keyboards, joysticks, yokes, gamepads, etc. As long as Windows can see it, so should the TrackIR software. Make sure whatever you choose isn't already assigned in MSFS2020.
