choosing new, more powerful VGA

Featured Replies

Issue: Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 crashes to desktop

My system:

Win10 Pro 20H2

I7-10700K

Motherboard: ASUS PRIME Z490-A

32 GB RAM

SSD 1TB

VGA: RTX 2070 SUPER EVO 8GB VRAM

Monitor: GIGABYTE 3440x1440

With my previous display 27’ 1920*1080 my VGA was powerful enough for FS2020.

With new one, VGA reaches 100% VRAM usage in high density scenes of FS2020.

As a result - crashes to desktop.

So, I’m choosing new, more powerful VGA.

Two options: RTX 3070 8GB VRAM or RTX 3080 10GB VRAM

I need community opinion – Is RTX 3070 8GB VRAM will be powerful enough for FS2020

with my new display?

How is the 8 GB 3070 going to be better than your current 8 GB 2070?

8 GB VRAM is 8 GB VRAM..

Instead of spending all that money, I would suggest lowering your settings slightly to avoid overrunning your 8 GB card.  Or avoid installing those high density sceneries..

If you're VRAM-starved now, just wait until MSFS moves to DX12.

I agree with Bert...dial back your demand on the VRAM, at least until something that answers the mail comes along, because a faster card with the same or slightly more VRAM isn't going to solve your problem.

Is that a good thing?  Meaning DX12 is more efficient so less VRAM used?

No.  DX12 apps tend to need more (often a lot more) VRAM, and they go "boom" if allowed to run out...the drivers now leave handling of overrun resources to the application instead of dealing with it at the driver level.  If 8GB is already a constraint in DX11, it's likely to be a serious limfac under DX12.

Well considering it's extremely difficult to find a 30xx card right now, maybe they should delay DX12 until more consumers can purchase the cards for higher vram.  My 1080 ti is still really nice with 11GB.
