Just going to run a Chromebook and not upgrade to a Windows computer. Too many problems with the new Sims! 😱
Trying to keep peace and harmony and the will of Landru on the site seems to be a full time job!

😂

Not bigger than the Russian attempt to copy the Saturn V. The Russians managed the biggest exploding rocket in history.

300,000 tons of propellant exploded. Equivalent to several kilotons of TNT. The largest man made non nuclear explosion in history. Thing is, if the RP1 and LOX had mixed it would have been much more powerful.

When you read more about the Soviet N1 rocket, they were essentially doing what Elon has done with SpaceX. They didn't have the ability to fully test the rocket on the ground or test stands, so basically had to fly it, see what happens, and fix it for the next launch. Didn't help that the original designer, Korolev, died during the design phase.

Yep... a philosophy that works for Elons relatively small Spaceship, but not for Russia's mega sized rocket.

By some accounts I have read, they were very close to a successful flight. Politics and economics both played a large part in the cancellation.

And so far, the N1 has still flown further than the SLS has...

Engine 2 had issues on ascent. Didn't reach proper chamber pressure during landing burn either. But in theory wasn't needed.

Something signifcant happened shortly after landing burn.

In case anyone is wondering about the cause of the mid air explosion...

“Ascent phase, transition to horizontal & control during free fall were good. A (relatively) small CH4 leak led to fire on engine 2 & fried part of avionics, causing hard start attempting landing burn in CH4 turbopump. This is getting fixed 6 ways to Sunday.”
