March 23, 20215 yr Hi I had a Samsung Odyssey but sold it due to low resolution, nausea and sweat. Now should I get a HP Reverb G2 or wait? Is the experience worth it? Thanks
March 25, 20215 yr they are now about $100 less than at christmas time. i don't think there's many other computer thingies getting cheaper at the moment
March 27, 20215 yr I love my G2, but it requires a pretty stout rig to be able to drive it, especially in MSFS. I've got an overclocked 10600K paired with an overclocked 2070 Super, and I wouldn't want much less than that, though others who might have less could give their $0.02 as I may be wrong. In today's environment where getting any GPU, even an "obsolete" 2070 Super is a Herculean task, if your existing rig isn't up to the task, you may find it will be awhile until you can find one that is. I've even seen dedicated system builders like Jaystwocents (or however that's spelled) recommending buying pre-builts from reputable SIs instead of trying to build you own, as at least they have contracts that entitle them to a certain amount of inventory. It must have really pained him to say that out loud LOL...
March 28, 20215 yr Author I have a RTX 2080, 32gb Ram and a i9-9900k, 3.6ghz. Should be ok? I've just set traffic and get already stutters with my 1920x1080 Monitor and ultra settings.
March 28, 20215 yr In my opinion, yes, that's stout enough to justify using a Reverb G2. But don't forget what opinions are...
March 29, 20215 yr My 2 cents: The G2 is really deceiving. It was supposed to be the “no compromise” VR headset, with even better panels than the G1, optics and audio from Valve, but the truth of the matter, is that Valve is delivering with fast reaction time (already more than 10 different SteamVR updates since the VR release), whereas WMR is lagging behind. The G2 has better panels but when you can compare both, you do realize the experience is much better when all the rest is 100% perfect and the Index delivers. It is amazing how tracking and Hz, let alone FOV and “sturdiness” make a whole lot of difference. People are usually saying it is 400$ more but I find it well justified IMHO given the experience you get in return. I purchased the G2 for simming, the Index for all the rest, with the added value to use the knuckles with the G2 if needed. It turns out I didn’t plug the G2 for 5 weeks now, and just use the Index which is giving me a superior experience, and barely lower visuals given I have to reduce the rendering so much to make the G2 running. They didn’t say during preorder the new lenses and their optics will require rendering 1.5 times more than with the G1 (for which my test system was very capable). It turns out I get better fps and can render more pixels with the Index in the end (2.2 x 2.4 @ 24fps prior WU3, 18fps now but they feel in both case like 90fps!!) With the latest SteamVR, I can run the Index with XP11 at SS 150% (2460 x 2732 nonetheless) with a 2070S in HDR graphics settings, at 22.5fps → 90Hz and this is just exceptional, because at this res with the Index, I get so sharp legibility compared to FS2020 I was even wondering whether I wasn’t wearing the G2. And here I realize we’re fighting for TAA+SS with FS2020 only to overcome in fact the rendering engine fuzziness, not just the VR panels lack of resolution. It was striking to me with this experience with XP11 and the Index. With a 2070S, I run TAA100 + SS124, which gives legible EFIS readings at seated distance to me, the small green ITT value in the TBM is at the limit of decoding/reading. It also gives fluid motion smoothing like I’ve documented above. My other balanced settings, TAA60 + SS220 which is suitable for anything and giving slightly better outside details is too much for motion smoothing on the 2070S but I didn’t try further reducing fps down to 15fps → 90Hz, I might try someday. NB: turn BLOOM OFF otherwise it affects EFIS (and integral lighting on buttons/knobs) legibility. NB: why 124? I find the render signal (res) matches the panel res in a way where it keeps some aliasing which increases legibility of small text. At 120, 122, 125, 126 etc… it doesn’t! Why 220 instead of 200? here this is the CAS Shader working and 200 is an integer scale which most likely is making the algorithm sampling in a too perfect way but canceling some of its advantage. At 220, which is 2.2x I find it is making a few more details popping up, but this might be due to the same reasons I find 124 producing some interesting aliasing for legibility too.
