Virtual Memory Settings and CTDs

Featured Replies

I have had CTDs off and on since buying  MSFS 2020 starting about 2 months ago. I have tried almost every suggestion, and the CTDs went away for awhile when I used the Vaccine, and came back with a vengeance as soon as I downloaded the latest Hotfix. After the Hotfix I would crash to desktop while trying to start MSFS , half the time. Then either on approach or after landing it would either CTD or while taxiing in after landing the screen would freeze permanently. The other minor problem I have had since day one, is when loading a flight plan, I would go to the G 530, and half the time there would be no flight plan on the flight plan page. I would have to restart the flight and then the plan would be there. This happened about 30% of the time.

Will Fly for Cheese, suggested this  as a fix:

" With 16 GB of RAM you need to Adjust your Page File

I have 16 GB 2133mhz RAM and my page file is set to;

Min - 12000

Max - 22000

It could explain all your CTDs."

I had never played around with Virtual Memory, but since nothing else was working, I decided to give it a try, and I used his suggested settings.

The end result.....No more CTDs, no freeze ups after landing, and every time I load a flight, the flight plan is in the G 530... Everytime!!!!!

Now this might not work for everyone, and some say with 16gb Ram you shouldn't have to do this, and my Ram usage is usually around 70-80% while flying, but for me it works perfectly. I was about to dump MSFS and even purchased P3D last week, but after looking at P3D, I decided I could never go back to that sim. So thankfully, I am now enjoying MSFS on every flight. Now the only worry of course, is what happens after the next update.....??😡

Same thing here with 32 GB RAM; I only have 256 GB M2 and thus wanted to make some space by getting rid of the page file thinking I shan't be needing it having 32 GB ram.  Wrong: CTDs! After putting it on automatic, everything is honkey dory and tickety boo!🐴🐴🐴

Interesting, I've never messed around with the page file.  Mine is set to let the system manage it, is that the best setting for 32GB ram?

Guess I spoke too soon. Running fine for a couple of days, and this morning MSFS won't even start . I hit fly and it CTDs. Finally got it going on the 3rd try. Now to see if I can finish the 125 mile flight.

Bob, just chiming in here to say that that suggestion was for you - based on what was going on with your rig and the steps we took to get right. We also had to get you to blow a couple of Asobo Official files away and then re-download them, etc.

Those settings do work but people should not just blindly do this without conducting investigation in to other causes; It might be something simpler after all - like a Mod in the Community folder, etc

Just seen you had CTD's this morning. Same way or different?

Well I tried to launch a flight this morning at the airport I used to fly out of in So Florida, North Perry. It CDT twice as soon as I hit fly. I tried from two different parking spots on the ramp. The third time I started from active runway, and it launched with no problem. Not sure if that had anything to do with it. I don't feel so bad about it, because I am reading so many posts on the MSFS forum about people having CTDs, many which started with the last hotfix, so I am apparently not alone in this. The only Mod I have in the community folder is the JF Arrow and the Mooney. The last thing I am going to do is put something in the community folder now, which may make things worse. I am not going to buy any add ons for this sim, until it shows signs of stability.

I keep going back to thinking that maybe this is a server problem . Sometimes it runs as smooth as silk for a day or two, and then the next day it is crash city.

I am sorry to hear that your CTD problems are not fixed yet. I have messed around with virtual memory settings earlier and I doubt whether it has any relation to CTD's. Off course, you still need enough total memory and I have seen MSFS use up to 28GB of memory. After setting a fixed amount I have gone back to let Windows manage it.

Well let's hope you have a happy ending Bob. 😉

Have you tried switching Servers in game?

No, don't even know how to do that. OK, I just looked it up. I will try that, if I have a problem starting it up again.

Well in the first instance - you ask and usually have to pay extra.

In the second, you click on your gaming icon top right of the Main Menu screen and Servers available will drop down. I flit between Northern Europe and Western Europe over here on the other side of the pond to you.

I'm not sure what you have over there, generally though they appear in the drop down in order of access speed so the one at the top is usually the preferred.
