This has been my experience as well.  I've tried the free alternatives now and then, just to see how they compare, and nothing has managed to simultaneously be as fluid and as configurable as TrackIR.   There are one or two new ones that have popped up that I haven't tried, though, so  it's possible the situation has changed.

Either way, head tracking will change your simming life.   Best thing for immersion and ease of use outside of a full VR setup.
