June 29, 20214 yr Nice view. As a former resident of Two-Niner Stumps, I always considered Palm Springs as low desert, but 29 Palms at aprox 2800 ft is high desert. Both dry as a beer glass in 1923. James M Driskell, Maj USMC (Ret)

June 29, 20214 yr Author I did 5 years from 88 to 93 my dad who is 80 was a Marine for 23 years and Vietnam vet. I was at Twentynine palms for 9 months in the Comm/Elect school. How bout you?
June 29, 20214 yr Two tours, 60-62 with 1st Medium Anti Aircraft Missile Battalion (old ground based Terrier missiles) and out of service in the mid-60s. Then back in 63 thru 65 as the CommO of 4th Battalion, 11th Marines. I had not been back to 29 Palms until almost 50 years later when we visited the base in October 2019 while on a driving trip thru the southwest. We drove on the base and found that it had really changed but I was still able to find my way around and recognized many of the buildings. When I was there, the base was more or less wide open but has become much more compact. Brought back many good memories of my days there. What did your dad do in Vietnam? I was there from 68 to 69 with the Airwing at Chu Lia as the MAG 13 CommO. The good ol' days! Jim Driskell USMC (Ret) James M Driskell, Maj USMC (Ret)
June 29, 20214 yr Author Ooh Rah! Dad was in Danang 13 months 68 and 69. He was on a hill. He was crypto
June 29, 20214 yr I spent the last of my Vietnam tour in Danang more or less in idle mode. Much more interesting with an operational unit instead of a headquarters. Go crypto! James M Driskell, Maj USMC (Ret)
June 29, 20214 yr Author Haha. Dad said there was a base in Danang he'd drive the jeep to every now and then. He got chewed out one day for having dirty boots and had a hard time keeping his mouth shut lol.
June 30, 20214 yr Yep, overrun with REMFs. Too bad, but one must remember that nothing is too good for the mud Marines and that's what they get, nothing! Jim James M Driskell, Maj USMC (Ret)
