July 24, 20214 yr In my previous post, about the Ilyushin 62M, from the reactions received, I gathered that, there are, at least, a few other aficionados, around, in this Forum, of such Russian aircraft, not just me and certain another member...🙂...though not all these folks may be flying such SIMs on the desktop. Also, in that post, for visual comparison, I'd referred to (and shown images of) the British Vickers VC10. To the un-initiated (yours truly included) in this matter of VC10 and IL-62, prompted by the (purely) visual similarity of the rear-engined quad-layout, below the T-tail, it's easy to overlook that these two planes are completely different beasts...! I was investigating, today, the differences a bit more, and, came across the title of an article, that sums it up all, quite well, "Any similarities (of IL-62) with VC10s living or dead are a mere Ilyushin."...🙂...aptly put, indeed.... Often mentioned in the same breath, the VC10 flew first (less than 6 months before IL-62), but, the IL-62 is certainly no VC10 copy, and stands, by itself, as a remarkable plane. Of course, the VC10, too, holds ground, as a pioneer, in its own right, in terms of avionics and technology (an advanced technological tour de force, so to speak, see my interior shots), and, above all, I like this plane a lot...In fact, knew of it (primarily due to Maltby's freeware), long before I got initiated into any Russian a/c. The IL-62 remains the largest airliner ever built with all-manual flight controls, using steel cables, rods, pulleys, weights and balances etc. Its cockpit needed a full complement of five crew members, named, (1) Ship’s Commander (2) Second Pilot (3) On-Board Mechanic (4) Navigator, and (5) Radio Operator. So, I was wondering, today, how would these Il-62M Pilots feel, if, they were transposed, somehow magically, to the cockpit of a FBW A320 (of course, I mean, the RW thing...🙂...not the one we fly from our own easy-chairs...)... OK, back to VC10, the subject of my post, here,...the (high-performance) VC10 held the record for the fastest subsonic trans-atlantic flight, for over 4 decades, until Feb 2020, when a BA B747, broke the record, bettering it by a meager 5 mins, and, that too, with an unfair but fortuitous assistance from nature, due to the favorable winds of the tropical cyclone, Storm Clara...! In this flight, here, I have taken my VC10 just about 40 miles out, from Tallinn Rwy, to a "Hold" pattern, so, I had to maintain a couple of notches of Flap extended, throughout, just to keep this plane under restraint, at low altitude,...🙂...(see images below)... And for airport, I've revisited, here, one of my favorites, in the city of Tallinn, which is the capital and the most populous city of Estonia, a country located on the eastern coast of the Baltic Sea in Northern Europe. The airport is just adjacent to Tallinn Bay, on the shore of the Gulf of Finland. I've lifted off Tallinn, Rwy 08, then heading 10 degrees off, at 74 degrees, 40 miles out to 4,000 ft, for a (user-defined) Hold, see GTN shot of my a/c entering the tear-drop for the Hold pattern. I've created this Hold at a custom/user waypoint (shown as ABC1 on the flightplan/MAP shot), pre-defined via the GTN 750 flightplan interface (btw, if one wishes to hold, for ILS Rwy 26, exactly per the Approach plate, it is specified at 70 degrees heading from TLL (Tallinn) VOR, 15nm out). I've next exited the hold, while in-bound towards Rwy, and then captured the ILS for Rwy 26 (entry point WPT to this approach being "MOKEX", as seen on the GTN Approach page, below), to, finally, touchdown back in Tallinn airport, on Rwy 26. As for airline, in this post, I've selected a less-known livery (since, VC10s, seen in the colors of BOAC/BA/RAF...are a bit common...). It's for "Gulf Air, Circa 1975, A40-VK". Please note, the Reg ID, on these VC10s, is (typically) printed (see images below), at the top (and on both sides) of the T-Tail. This specific VC10, from its birth in 1963 to its death (i.e. scrapped) in 2001, passed through these owners (BOAC -> BA -> Gulf Air -> RAF). And, if you wish to view RW pictures of this plane, please search e.g. for "Gulf Air VC10 A40-VK Diversion day 15 Dec 1975" for a nice picture of it, captured at Manchester airport. Hope you enjoy these pictures of this classic quad-jet (considered among the most beautiful airliners of the early Jet Age, gone but not forgotten...)...!! Thanks for reading and viewing....! Good flying...! [DrzewieckiDesign (EETN), JF (VC10)] Edited July 24, 20214 yr by P_7878

July 24, 20214 yr Not that the VC10 ever had a Garmin 😀. IIRC they started off with a doppler fit (like the early 707's) and had the C-IVA INS fitted later.

Yes, the (RXP) GTN750 is a wonderful device and tool-chest of navigational niceties... I'm bit of a fan of custom WPTs...so, I like to define one or two while using a FMS/MCDU too. Here, it's so easy to create, on this (graphical) user interface, very intuitive, (whether Place/Bearing/Distance or Latitude/Longitude types...etc...), liked the little orange square symbol for my custom WPT too...🙂...And, of course, the “rubber band” feature for modification of flightplan legs is also very nice and convenient (though, I do recall having use of "drag/drop" on FSX Flightplan, back since ~2006....had thought that was so wonderful...🙂......)... Anyway, this all, is great to play and have fun with....especially if one is new to it...like I'm... 10 hours ago, lzamm said: Not that the VC10 ever had a Garmin 😀. Yes, you're right...I've just chosen to spice up my GPS navigation of this JF (VC10) version, here, a little,....🙂...In fact, I've also a (separate) customized panel of this plane, with added CIVA-INS pop-ups... The VC10 was (primarily) competing with B707 for trans-atlantic flights...(while the Il-62 was being designed for domestic long-range passenger transport...)...If you wish look back at the comments exchanged on my previous IL-62M post, there is reference to all three modes of navigation (1) Doppler (2) INS (3) GPS, and, I'm currently digging into the Doppler method...for that PT 62M version... 1 hour ago, Alaska738 said: Excellent shots! July 25, 20214 yr Lovely VC-10 set! "Any similarities (of IL-62) with VC10s living or dead are a mere Ilyushin."" Love it! Then I was reminded of " Just an Illusion" a great 80's track by Imagination. 😆 My FS Videos
