MSFS - must have addons / mods

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

after many years in P3D and some hold out on MSFS I finally took the switch.

I invested quite heavily in a new machine (5900x, 3080 ti, LG OLED48CX) and bought MSFS. I am quite happy with the performance. And the visuals are stunning.

Mods I already have:

- A32NX

- EDDM from the marketplace

- Little Nav Map

My question:

What would you guys recommend for tubeline flying? I am not a GA person, I want to happily travel along at 40.000 feet and enjoy the flight attendants service :-)

Thanks in advance and happy flying!

Hi Stefan,

The AS CRJ is nice now.

The Best Aircraft for carrying Pax IMO is the PMDG DC-6. Stunning aircraft.

The WT CJ4 is great.

I put all my money into paywear airports. I would use Simbrief with navigraph for what you say.

Enjoy!

CRJ by Aerosoft is quite good (it will simulate day to day operation of the CRJ but it won't simulate failures).

DC-6 by PMDG is also very good and the community loves it.

737 by PMDG may be released between end of summer to the end of this year.  Watch for news from PMDG.

Fenix A320 of course.  The Fenix A320 could even be higher fidelity than the FSLabs A320.  But we will see how good the Fenix A320 really is when it's released.

PMDG 777 may also be released by next year.

Quality Wings 787 was estimated to be released in Q2 of 2021 but Quality Wings missed the release in Q2.  Pay attention to Quality Wings news because they may have an update on their 787 in the next few months.

Maddog announced they were working on the MD-80 last year for MSFS, but I don't recall any updates since then.

There are other tubeliner projects for MSFS as well.  But the ones above are the most prominent, from well known companies with good reputations. And of course, the CRJ and DC-6 is already released for MSFS so you can enjoy those two planes immediately.

I already heard about the Fenix A320. Also, sure, I will always watch PMDG, ORBX, QW etc. very closely as I enjoyed all their P3D stuff 🙂

There are also some good mods for the default MSFS airliners.  For the 747, search for information on Salty's mod. For the 787, look up the Heavy-Division/B78XH mod.  People have been able to use the Salty mod for the 747, and the Heavy-Division/B78XH mod for the 787, to fly on VATSIM.  I have not used either of these mods as I fly the Cessna 172 on VATSIM.

From my understanding, the Salty 747 mod is quite good and many people have said good things about it.  It's not "study level," but it does bring the 747 up to speed with more systems implementations than the default 747 (maybe somebody with experience with the 747 Salty mod can give more information about it here).

And of course, the FBW A320 which is free, is a good airliner to start with in MSFS.

Question - as I only purchased the standard version of MFSF. Is it possible to upgrade to the higher versions and is it worth it? Especially the 787?

I personally like the 787 that comes with the Premium Deluxe version of MSFS.  It gives me an extra airliner to fly.  When it comes to "hard core" simmers, I am not a "hard core" simmer for airliners.  Since I am targeting a recreational pilot license one day, I am more concerned about "study level" for GA planes, specifically a "study level" 152 or 172 that I would be training with when I go for my recreational pilot license (for this reason, I fly the 172 on VATSIM).  So for me, I don't really care if the airliner I am flying is not "study level" because I will never fly it in real life and because of that, I enjoy the 787 that comes with the Premium Deluxe version of MSFS.

You should be able to upgrade to the premium deluxe version.  Not sure how much extra it costs, that you'll have to find out yourself.

As for how the 787 with the Heavy-Division/B78XH mod flies, I think you should watch the video for yourself.  Here is a VATSIM controller, who was on the official MSFS channel, flying the 787 with the Heavy-Division/B78XH mod on VATSIM: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/1095568073

I've reviewed the vast majority of payware aeroplanes for MSFS on my youtube channel if you need reviews of stuff like that. As with everything though, don't just take my word for it, check out many opinions before spending any cash.

I'd also recommend having a bit of a search around flightsim.to for some add-ons, and it's fairly apparent which are the good ones if you list things by popularity. One in particular I'd recommend, is the Shift-Z one which replicates the option you had in FSX/P3D for on screen info up at the top left, since there is no default indication of sim rate when using accelerated time and of course it is useful for all the other info it imparts too. Even though you want tubeliner action, be aware there's quite a funky freeware Dornier Alpha Jet out there too if you fancy some faster more maneuverable  jet action.

In short, for airliners, you've got two good quality payware ones, which are the PMDG DC6 and the Aerosoft CRJ, after that, the payware ones are definitely heading into iffy territory, although I've reviewed them all, so you can watch those if you like. Beyond this, to quickly get up to speed, of all the payware stuff, I'd say the standout ones to have a look at are:

For modern jets, the Aerosoft CRJ (avoid the Captain Sim B777 and unless you are willing to accept a good many compromises, think very carefully before buying the Bredok3D B737 MAX). The Virtualcol Embraer 170 is another option for something cheap and cheerful, and it has been patched and improved just the other day, so initial reviews may be misleading, so possibly check that out.

For vintage fun including one airliner, the PMDG DC-6, the Blue Mesh Designs Caudron C.430 Rafale, the Aeroplane Heaven Cessna 140 and the AT Simulations Piaggio P.149

Moving out of the airliner realm:

For whirlybird action, the FlyInside Bell 47G

For low and slow, the Top Rudder 103 Solo

For GA singles, the Carenado Mooney M20R Ovation and the Just Flight PA28 (several variants)

For GA twins, the Carenado PA34 Seneca.

For warbird action, they're all pretty good, among them the Flying Iron Supermarine Spitfire IX, the Milviz Chance Vought Corsair and the Big Radials Curtiss P40B Tomahawk, so you can't really go wrong with any of those.

Be aware that there are some good freebies out there too, as noted that freebie Alpha Jet, there's a Freebie chopper which is good and there are many community tweaks to some of the default aeroplanes which improve them considerably, among these some for the private jets, the big jets and the GA aeroplanes. so you don't actually have to spend money to get things rocking along pretty well. You can find gliders out there as well.

It is as well to be aware however, that the more stuff you put in your install community folder, the more chance there is of you slinging a ghost in the machine which may impact on stability, so don't go mental and put every freebie under the sun in there, as it will at some point inevitably cause issues. I've severely limited what I put in there out of the ton of free stuff out there, and as a result, my MSFS is just about the most stable version of an MS Flight Sim I've ever had.
