Likely cause of CTDs, Freezes in SU5 (and workaround)

Featured Replies

Hi everybody!

I installed SU5 today and wondered what everyone is doing that there are so many complaints about crashes, "can't even start sim" posts in this and the MS forums - everything was running pretty fine here... until I decided to check if my Orbs KORS airport is still OK -> FS stopped responding after hitting "FLY!" so I had to kill the process in Task Manager  Even worse, when I tried to restart FS it crashed right before loading the main selection screen.

So the source of all these problems people are having is quite likely a 3rd-party add-on airport rendered incompatible by SU5 being stuck in their config files (because that was the last departure airport they selected before installing SU5), or trying to use that airport after installing SU5, flying over or near such an airport etc.  I have exactly 2 (in words: two) add-on airports, hence I wasn't really affected until I touched one of them.

To fix this, I edited the line memorizing the last departure airport in this file:

\Appdata\Local\\Yadayada_Terrible_Long_Path_TO_FS\\LocalState\MISSIONS\CustomFlight.flt

There is a "[Departure]" section in the file, starting with "ICAO=" (so "ICAO=KORS" in my case).  Enter some place with no 3rd-party airport there and you should be able to start the sim to enter the Content Manager and disable 3rd-party stuff there until Asobo comes up with the announced hotfix.

If somebody has an account in the MS forum, you're welcome to to post this there if you feel inclined (I never bothered signing up there after the the MS Store and XBox account creation orgy. :))

Best,

Ollie

Good theory, except people are reporting freezing problems with not addons in the community folder.

I'm not talking about the Community folder (which should be empty when installing a Sim Update anyway).  This is about payware 3rd-party airports installing themselves elsewhere. I'm about to brick FS again with the other 3rd-party airport I bought (LFMD) to see what happens.

🙂

Edit: That one seems to be OK. Tried Orcas Is. again -> freeze.

FWIW, last night I started a flight KORS and it CTD’d at the flight loading screen.  Restarted my computer and tried the same flight and it worked no issue.

Well thanks for checking! Too bad it's more complicated than I thought, obviously there's more than just some 3rd-party airport needed. 😕 nvm I guess, I'm off buzzing yachts at the Cote D'Azure. 🙂
