Nvidia Studio drivers?

Featured Replies

Yes running the latest GRD drivers fine 471.41 with HAGS on and TrackIR 5 then again I have rarely a CTD...

Well, we haven't done any proper surveys, but let's look at some strong anecdotal evidence...

Beforehand, we had people running all kinds of Nvidia drivers, from the latest, through to really old ones that people say are faster on MSFS, but on my PC and at my settings never showed any detectable difference (i.e plus or minus 1 FPS), but CTD's for the vast majority were few and far between on all of these drivers.

After SU5, there were lots of reports of CTD's.  (I count myself amongst that group also).  After the SU5 hotfix 1, CTD's have decreased but not fully gone. (once again I count my self in that group).

So, based on this, and with Asobo saying they are fixing the CTD's, in what way can the drivers be to blame?  Like JYW says - a lot of these potential fixes are just clutching at straws.
There is no malice in it though, just people trying to help, and people trying anything in desperation trying to get a flight out of MSFS - all quite natural.

My own thoughts on the CTD's are: -

1.  Caused by changes to how the sim is rendering causing some incompatibility with the driver (Event Viewer said my driver was resetting and recovering every time I had a CTD - never had that even once before SU5).

2.  Although I am getting stellar FPS, and my GPU was showing about 10-15% lower utilisation, my card was running hotter, and at one stage had reached 87C on on CTD (not all CTD's though - some were cool 77C etc)

3.  No doubt a few CTD's are caused by the usual incompatibilities with add-ons, and stuff in the community folder - payware and freeware.  for example, we know old versions of the FBW A320 are causing a few crashes.

4.  Ultimately, if there is an issue between the drivers and how MSFS is trying to render, Asobo will have to change.  Nvidia will say 'sorry, but we are working fine in hundreds of other titles, so we are not moving anything, you will have to change at your end'.

I think this is the story in the main.  Asobo and the 3PD's will gradually weed the CTD's out, alongside us learning how to cope with the sim and some of its new peculiarities.
I would expect we will be back very close to where we were by WU6 and the CTD hotfixes it will bring, alongside some 3PD fixes.

PS.  I am not saying a completely clean install of a driver isn't a good idea.  I think it is always worth a go if you are having problems.  This can apply to any title.

I'll add a 5th point to the list: CTD caused by FS2020 own code protection...

I've traced some of the CTD I've experienced, to portions of their code which was supposed to be decrypted in-situ but which wasn't yet.
