May 6, 200719 yr I used to know a guy that flew the Blackbird from Mildenhall in Suffolk. His name is Blair Bozek and I fondly remember one of his statements.......I asked him, what do you do if they fire a missile at you?He answered in his best American accent, "Aw we just out run it".SR71 magic, eh? Top Speed is 'STILL' classified information! Dave Taylor
May 6, 200719 yr Great story Dave :-lol I quite fancy recreating the 1972 New York to Mildenhall run to see if I can get anywhere near breaking the 1 hour 54 mins record for transit.

Yeah Blair was featured in a couple of ducumentaries, back seat Reconnaisance Officer behind his pilot Dan House. They were both part of the 'Det-4' detachment at Mildenhall. Dave Taylor
May 6, 200719 yr Dave - Do you have any details on the exact route of that record breaking flight in Sept 74 (not 1972 as I mentioned above)? I am assuming it was pretty much a straight line between New York and London (not Mildenhall as said above) on a map. Would like to recreate it as exactly as possibble in FSX. Thanks..... Mark
May 6, 200719 yr Mark, no I haven't. All I can tell you is that it was probably a straight line at 85,000ft where the Blackbird had no other traffic problems ;-)Still is the highest and fastest air breathing jet aircraft ever used. Dave Taylor
May 7, 200719 yr Hi Guys,Take a look at Leland Haynes superb SR-71 site!http://www.wvi.com/~sr71webmaster/la001.html and more importantly this link here for maps and crew maps:http://www.wvi.com/~sr71webmaster/srspee~1.htmThe upward curvature being a shorter distance than a straight line across the atlantic.I'm glad you like the plane, I certainly am very fond of it and we made every effort to get the flight modelling as per the dash one. What a ride the real life crews had......I can only imagine the actual feeling of all that power by using flight simulator - real life must have been something else!Don't forget there is a flight plan including from Kadena AB around the periphery of the Russian coast and Vladivostok, and also Beale AFB inlcuding AI KC-135Q and U2s available at our Alphasim site.Best regards,David AKA Alphasim-Quid21
May 7, 200719 yr David, I can only tell you that 'Blair' as was all the crews dedicated to 'their' aircraft and literally lived, breathed and eat their jobs!On a VIP visit we got invited to at Mildenhall, while chatting to them in the billets, a couple of Dutch F-16 pilots dropped in after being diverted to there from a cancelled 'display' somewhere and the 'Habu' crews were joking that, their Missions weren't just a 'kick-the-tyres-and-jump-aboard' thing, they actually prepared for their jobs hours before. May 7, 200719 yr David Many thanks for the link to the detailed maps of the speed runs, they were exactly what I was looking for :-beerchug
May 8, 200719 yr No problem - I'd be interested to see how you get on!! Remember to descend for refuelling at real life subsonic refuelling track length - but I'm certain the record can be achieved - and if the refuelling tracks are too short exceeded!!Post back when you've done it so we can see what time!CheersDavid AKA Alphasim-Quid21
