A little writeup of a good flight post WU6

Featured Replies

I was going to continue on my glowing cloud thread but here's some thoughts I had just tonight after enjoying an hour's worth of flight simming at night with live weather.

I had posted a pic of me entering an ominous cloud layer (actually in between layers) as I left the low stratus clouds behind.  I headed to a small uncontrolled field KRWN, SE of Gary, IN - uhhh simulated an IFR popup cause I couldn't maintain VFR anyway.  (Not a great idea going into a convective area but it's flightsim so it's okay hehe).  Anyway, using the WT G1000 Nxi - I pulled up an rnav approach, and the AP flew it very well - just like it would irl.  (sometimes the STEC 55x in the real cirrus I flew was not great....but I think the Asobo version has a GFC 700 - which is much better).  I ran live weather tonight and I was just on the trailing edge of a large convective sigmet moving eastbound.  At night, single pilot, and in moderate rain, I broke out just a hundred above mins at KRWN.  It looked real.  The rain was impeding my view of the runway lights a little and the gusty winds made landing a challenge.

Wow.

I flew back towards Chicago wondering how the sim would treat this receding line of weather.  It did very well - and as I flew to Midway the weather broke up, revealing the shining city lights once again.  Picked up the ILS 31C via HILLS (WT is working on the automatic CDI flip I think or maybe I switched to VLOC on my own), but anyway shot that approach down at landed at KMDW.  So while the weather was about 1-2 hours old per the METAR, the sim did a good job of showing increased clouds, to thunderstorm, then receding clouds back to clear when I landed at MDW.  I know a lot of users write about how the weather is accurate for them but this is the first time it's been pretty close for me!

In addition to the weather I've set ultra on the new cache setting and with Track IR, the panning was very smooth and fps were decent enough.  Only had a few stutters here and there.  Not bad for my aging 4790K CPU.  I've been overly critical (well maybe overly isn't the right word - but critical for sure) of the sim.  This latest update (aside from update debacle) has really improved things on my system.  The WT G1000 NXi is amazing and seriously, everyone should try it.

You cab barely makeout the edge of the more intense weather here as I leave that line behind me.

Dude the last shot there, did you turn on bokeh / focus effect with F1 button? Looks amazing.

Thanks.  Yeah that's an artsy fartsy shot with the Drone View... and once in drone view I brought up the cameras button on the floating toolbar, and changed to AUTO focus.  You can do manual too.  And then play around with focal length and distance from subject etc.

That's pretty neat. I haven't tried that stuff before. The pictures seem more alive and interesting with some good blur in the right places.

Cool. I don't have the Cirrus, but love the airplane IRL. What is your thoughts on it as someone who has flown the real airplane? Does it have anti ice in sim?

If you're meaning the fiki tks stuff then no. I think this is a older G3 version.  But it's the sim, so you can just fly into icing and use window heat to clear the ice hehe.

The plane itself is kind of basic - it's not nearly as good as the Torquesim SR in xplane.  But with the WT g1000 it's not terrible.
