My First G-Sync flight...

Featured Replies

All I can say is wow...  I'm finally starting to understand my VRR capable monitor!

P3D settings pretty much pinned, VSync On FPS Unlimited

Viotek 49 ultrawide at 5120x1440 144hz but locked to 60hz refresh  P3d in Fullscreen

If I left the refresh at 120hz I got the G-Sync brightness flicker.  By locking to 60hz I got all the fluidity I need even at KEWR with no flicker

VSync is set to Fast in NVCP

Honestly, I am in awe.  Never seen P3D this smooth.  I was exposed to this in the "other" sim but after some time in hospital this was my first chance to play with it in P3D and I am extremely pleased.  The other sim didn't require the 60hz refresh lock but I've always said my personal preference in any flight simulator was 60Hz so "for me" it's ideal anyway.

So in P3D

FPS unlocked

VSync On

In NVCP

Monitor refresh 60Hz (This was key to eliminate G-Sync flicker)

GSync Enabled

VSync Fast

I'm using a DisplayPort cable as well not certain all HDMI support this.

I am super super pleased right now, watching traffic passing the opposite direction of me @Fl350 doing 600kts ground speed with AIG-OCI and AIGLRP and panning back and forth to either side of the VC there isn't even a micro hiccup as traffic passes by.   Yay...

My reference for the Freesync Flicker issue...

Hi Paul,

Glad you are enjoying your new monitor.

I have similar experience with my Predator X34. Gsynch made an appreciable difference to not having stutters.

Did you by chance try the VRR setting in P3D Display settings?

I am now using this instead of Vsynch. Still evaluating but looks pretty good.

Note: Gsynch as far as I know is not supported by HDMI so you need to use DP.

Hello Mark,

Thank you, I am indeed!  G-Sync does seem to be a very powerful technology and I'm still familiarizing myself.

I don't think I've played with VRR in the P3D display settings.  Is that in the Graphics options in the iin game menu?

I thought so on the DisplayPort.  Both of my 49's using DPI.

All the best!

Hi Paul,

You will find VRR in the Display settings of P3D  and should be visible under the internal frame rate limiter slider. Above the slider is the in-sim Vsynch option/checkbox

@psolk  Do you have a technical explanation for why a rate of 60Hz eliminates flicker in a 144Hz monitor?
Also, why you enabled both Gsync and Vsync, and why you locked at 60 instead of 30 or unlimited fps?

Thank you.

Hardware: i7-8700k, GTX 1070-ti, 32GB ram, NVMe/SSD drives with lots of free space.
Software: latest Windows 10 Pro, P3Dv4.5+, FSX Steam, and lots of addons (100+ mostly Orbx stuff).

Also Paul, I would be interested in the outcome when your monitor’s refresh rate is locked at 120Hz with VSync Off.

Thanks.

Mike

Hey guys, sorry for the delay, health issues....

120Hz VSync Off I get a noticeable GSync Flickr.  The explanation for that is here:  https://www.displayninja.com/what-is-freesync-brightness-flickering/

By reducing the monitor refresh to 60 and enabling VSync I am getting the same benefits of VSync we have always had, especially limiting tearing with VSync Off.  With GSync on and VRR when my FPS falls below 60 into the 30-60FPS range I now get the benefits of GSync without any flicker of rapidly fluctuating FPS.

So VSync+GSync gives me all the benefits of VSync at higher FPS plus the benefits of GSync when I fall below 60.

Hope that makes sense!

Hi Paul,

I hope you are feeling much better and I appreciate you finding the time to respond. Those of us who have read through the linked article, and paused to allow their heads to stop spinning (lol), will have picked up some very useful info. I’ve marked the page for future reference and, it has to be admitted, further careful digestion 😉

Many thanks!

Regards,

Mike
