(Milviz) Porter - Shoreham-by-Sea to Southampton...

Featured Replies

This post is triggered by the many excellent (recent) posts and pictures, here, about an iconic aircraft, the Pilatus Porter. From old times, some of us might remember a freeware (SIM) developer, by the name, Tim "Piglet" Conrad, who used to contribute many interesting (less-known and off the beaten-track) sim planes, for us...The Pilatus Porter was one of his well-modeled airplanes...that I recall well...(see e.g. the first 2 shots below, the Turbo-Porter lifting off the dangerous Courchevel (LFLJ) Runway)....Next had come a payware version of this a/c, the FSD Porter....then, in more modern times, came the (FSX/P3D) Milviz Porter...which, somehow, I never got to acquire...(was always in the back of mind, though), and, next, has just arrived the MSFS version PC-6, also from Milviz, looking so impressive in its most modern habitat...Anyway, seeing recently all these nice (MSFS) Porter pictures, I thought, today, of finally acquiring the Milviz PC-6 version for my system...so, please find, here, pictures from part of a (short) ~40 nm (pleasure) flight, with this a/c, in Southern England (see MAP), between two of my favorite (UK) airports (Brighton City Airport, commonly called Shoreham Airport (EGKA), and Southampton (EGHI) that Orbx calls "Spectacular Southampton!"...)...

As an a/c manufacturer, Pilatus needs no introduction...e.g. we are all too familiar with "the Swiss Army Knife of airplanes", the legendary and venerable PC-12, a virtual version of which, was given to us, first, by Flight1. BTW, here is something, you may or may not have noticed, that was noted with the original SIM, a statement issued by the Vice President of the Pilatus Business Aircraft, Ltd., located in Broomfield, Colorado, the Swiss a/c manufactures' (dedicated) site in U.S.:

"We'd been looking for a high-quality Pilatus PC-12 plug-in for Microsoft Flight Simulator for several years, and as soon as we heard Flight One had one available we browsed their website to look at what they'd created. We were simply blown away by what we saw...The flight model is a lot of fun and it's a great way for Pilatus enthusiasts to get an introduction to a fantastic pilot's aircraft..."

So, it was a (SIM) product endorsed by Pilatus itself...always a good thing for us, the wannabe Pilatus Pilots...🙂...I presume...

The PC-12 flew first in 1991, and the PC-6 had flown first in 1959. PC-6 production stopped just 2 years ago, in 2019, full 60 years later...! When its production ceased, it was the end of an era for Pilatus, PC-6 been one of the world's longest-running production stories in the aviation history. Of course, Pilatus has been making "rugged", "reliable", "versatile", and "proven" (STOL) a/c since before WWII. PC-6 was produced in numerous variations of 18+ different models...(I counted today). Milviz, here, has (authentically) replicated one specific variant - a late "PC-6 B2-H4" model.

Regarding this post, having seen a Porter, here, in this forum, flying in the Himalayas, I initially wished to fly the Milviz Porter in Tara Air livery, which is the airline, that would have taken me from Kathmandu to Lukla, decades ago, when I'd visited the Kathmandu airport, in Nepal. The plane was likely to be a DHC "Twotter", not a Pilatus Porter, though, as I recall...anyway, adverse weather conditions around Lukla, had precluded my chance to visit Lukla...maybe for my own good...

Today, I did find a Milviz Porter in Tara Air Livery (see the 3rd shot, below). However, I've opted, here, instead, to fly one of Milviz's own Amphibian repaints. This Privately owned (French "Zebra" Porter, F-GLEU) is in active service, and, as I post, Flightaware tells me that, today, Oct 2nd, it's, in fact, flying somewhere near Parmiers Les Pujols (LFDJ), in France...Oh well...wherever it is flying in the RW, good-luck to it...🙂...

Hope you enjoy these pictures, below, of this iconic aircraft, along with these two airports, from my virtual world, on a flight between EGKA and EGHI. Please note, per my pop-up screens of (RXP) GTN750, for this post, after lift-off, I'm headed "Dir-To" CI20 Fix (i.e. directly to the centerline intercept course for ILS 20 approach) of EGHI airport.

Thanks for your interest...! Good flying...!!

Great shots, P_7878! Like you (and many others I assume) I started out with the "Piglet" PC-6, moved on to the Milviz one and have settled now with the MSFS version. Enjoy this nice plane in FSX!

Any attempt to stretch fuel is guaranteed to increase headwinds

My specs: AMD Radeon RX6700XT, AMD Ryzen 9 5900X, 32GB RAM, 34" monitor, screen resolution: 2560x1080

Don't forget there was a for the ancient flight sim times a really good rendition of FSD out there, too back in the early times. I have flown them all and now in MSFS its marvelous to have it back... And with MV adding stuff to the current stage1 and FSG developing another promising alternative the times are good for us Porter lovers in all current sims...

Cheers

T.
