REX weather for MSFS opinions?

Featured Replies

I also see no reason to purchase REX weather system. MSFS weather system is extremely good and immersive. Sure sometimes it is late to update but personally I would rather have an immersive experience than seeing clouds suddenly change to something else in one second.

The same here. Give me the MSFS weather system ….

I've had Rex since it launched and never once had anything resembling even vaguely accurate weather from it. I'm no longer optimistic that they'll ever get it right.

@lupedelupe could you be more specific? By weather, do you mean the physical parameters like temperature, wind direction and speed, and pressure, or do you mean cloud layer depiction and precipitation? Or is it both?

Thanks.

Both. I have a small selection of Favourite aerodromes in the Settings; and REX does provide plausible wx reports for these. Yet it injects the weather from the nearest international airport (some distance away) which is unfortunately nowhere near accurate enough. Why it calculates local wx then injects the METAR from a distance airport is beyond me.

And I have never seen even mildly accurate cloud cover in my local area.

Asobo's weather, when it works (but seems very reliable these days), is 98% spot-on.

Asobo's weather is so good it actually kept me from flying yesterday!  I've been at the bottom of the world flying from South America to Antarctica and exploring Rothera and other bases.  Yesterday I was set to do a flight from Rothera to Marambio.  I set everything up, weather didn't look great but its a sim so that's never really "stopped" me before.  I departed, climbing to 11,500 to clear the mountains and it was like a wall of clouds.   Checked the minimums again at Marambio thinking maybe it was breaking up on the other side and had to return to Rothera and shut it down for another day.  It was the most realistic sim experience I've has where the weather depiction looked so ominous I did what I would have done in real life and turned around!

Have a Wonderful Day

Totally strange. As near as I can tell, the METARs in the US are captured correctly and the physical parameters are correctly plugged into the sim. The cloud description can vary, especially when there's a transition from one airport to another during a scheduled update. Still it's perfectly within what I might expect IRL, given that cloud cover might differ depending on how close one actually is to the weather observation at the airport. I never expected the cloud cover to be "spot on" when flying, rather I wanted to know if conditions at the airport were VFR, MVFR, IFR, or low IFR, and I certainly did my best to avoid that last one flying single engine/single pilot.

I do appreciate the default weather, however, and the cloud depictions can be spectacular. However, I have had circumstances where the physical parameters simply didn't fit what the RL METARs reported. Between that and the lack of availability of in-sim METARs other than via the somewhat flaky ATIS system, I find that experience somewhat limiting. It all depends on what one thinks is "right" and it's clear from this post stream that opinions vary. Hurray for choices.

Anyway, thanks for replying.

Hello, honnestly i am not using REX anymore. I am very disappointed by the weather accuracy.

There seems to be lot of reinventing of wheels going on with weather. All of the issues noted here were solved for FS many, many, years ago. As an avid Vatsimmer this is all extremely frustrating 🙄
