Hide and Seek in New Zealand

Featured Replies

For this flight, we are back on the North Island of New Zealand. We want to fly low and slow and search for eight unregistered airstrips. Three further landings are planned at somewhat easier-to-find airports.

We depart from Rotorua (NZRO) and head south.

The first airstrip is Wairakei South (NZ2S, 08/26). Just about 4 miles further south is our next landing, Centennial Park (NZ3X, 06/24), which is easy to find. We fly around the mountain and head for Rangitaiki Airfield (NZRK, 16/34). Now we have time to enjoy the scenery of the beautiful North Island. The next two landings are close together again. First, we land at Wharekopae (NZ2U, 04/22) and just about 5 miles northeast we reach Rakauroa (NZ2Y, 12/30). We head to the coast and land at Gisborne (NZGS), a “normal” airport. We follow the coast and have two stops on the small peninsula. The first stop is at Okepuha (NZ2W, 02/20) and just 5 miles south we reach Onenui (NZ3D, 09/27). We head north and reach Tahaenui Station (NZ2V, 10/28), our next landing. To relax the concentration a bit, our next stop is Wairoa (NZRO), a normal, easy-to-find airport. Our last challenge is finding (and landing at) Hawkes Bay (NZ4F, 08/26). 5 miles to the east is Napier (NZNR), today’s destination.

Documentation
The flight plan can be found here.

Aircraft
The flight has 260 miles and 11 landings, so there is no need to rush. I will be in the Piaggio P149, other suitable airplanes include the Cessna 172, Cessna 182, the Piper (Turbo) Arrow III, and others. Please fly what you like.

Additional Scenery

Required for this flight are the two North Island Unregistered Airstrips packages:

https://flightsim.to/file/6219/new-zealand-north-island-unregistered-airstrips-part-1

https://flightsim.to/file/6670/new-zealand-north-island-unregistered-airstrips-part-2

We used these packages before, you may have them on your system already.

Available are enhancements for Napier and Rotorua (Recommended but not required):

https://flightsim.to/file/3396/nza-simulations-nz-aus-mfs2020-discord-nzro-rotorua-scenery-pack-1-0

https://flightsim.to/file/698/napier-nznr-nz-custom-airport-napier-scenery-fix

These add-ons require the NZA Model library:

https://flightsim.to/file/17597/nza-model-library

ORBX published an improved NZ mesh as payware.

Time and Weather
For takeoff, set the simulator at 3:30 pm local for October 23, 2021.
We prefer real weather, but it could be necessary to select a preset with VFR conditions.

Mike pointed out, that two fields, Hawkes Bay and Onenui, are actually included in part 3:

New Zealand North Island airfield pack Pt. 3 » Microsoft Flight Simulator

Depending on when you downloaded part 1 and part 2, these fields may be included in either part one or part 2 already. Anyway, it is wortwhile checking, that you have both airfields installed as they are almost impossible to find without the addons.

Thanks Mike!

Cheers!

That was an excellent flight.  Could see that we were flying over wine country by the depiction of the vineyards.  Great flying!
