October 18, 20214 yr For this flight, we are back on the North Island of New Zealand. We want to fly low and slow and search for eight unregistered airstrips. Three further landings are planned at somewhat easier-to-find airports. We depart from Rotorua (NZRO) and head south. The first airstrip is Wairakei South (NZ2S, 08/26). Just about 4 miles further south is our next landing, Centennial Park (NZ3X, 06/24), which is easy to find. We fly around the mountain and head for Rangitaiki Airfield (NZRK, 16/34). Now we have time to enjoy the scenery of the beautiful North Island. The next two landings are close together again. First, we land at Wharekopae (NZ2U, 04/22) and just about 5 miles northeast we reach Rakauroa (NZ2Y, 12/30). We head to the coast and land at Gisborne (NZGS), a “normal” airport. We follow the coast and have two stops on the small peninsula. The first stop is at Okepuha (NZ2W, 02/20) and just 5 miles south we reach Onenui (NZ3D, 09/27). We head north and reach Tahaenui Station (NZ2V, 10/28), our next landing. To relax the concentration a bit, our next stop is Wairoa (NZRO), a normal, easy-to-find airport. Our last challenge is finding (and landing at) Hawkes Bay (NZ4F, 08/26). 5 miles to the east is Napier (NZNR), today’s destination. DocumentationThe flight plan can be found here. I will be in the Piaggio P149, other suitable airplanes include the Cessna 172, Cessna 182, the Piper (Turbo) Arrow III, and others. Please fly what you like.
