November 22, 20214 yr I understand, maybe wrongly, that the DDR5 ram are not working as well as the DDR4 one on a Z690 motherboard. Is it true and is it worthwhile to wait a few months for the dust to settle ? November 22, 20214 yr There's certainly some truth that DDR5 based on its use cases may not provide huge performance increases but mileage can vary. I read this article which surprisingly came out with one of the conclusions that DDR4-3200 basically holds its own against DDR5. https://www.techpowerup.com/review/intel-core-i9-12900k-alder-lake-ddr4-vs-ddr5/7.html SpoilerSystem specs: MFG Crosswind pedals| ACE B747 yoke |Honeycomb Bravo throttleNow built: P3Dv5.3HF2: Intel i5-12600K @4.8Ghz | MSI Z690-A PRO | Asus Dual RTX 4070 Super OC 12Gb| 32Gb Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 3200Mhz |Samsung 980Evo Pro PCIe 500Gb | WD Black SN850 PCIe 2Tb | WD SA510 4Tb |beQuiet 802 Tower Case|Corsair RM850 PSU | Acer Predator X34P 3440x1440pMark AldridgeMSFS2024 SU5 & P3D v5.3 HF2
November 22, 20214 yr The issue with DDR5 is the Cas Latency where as DDR4 at 3600mhz may have Latency as low as 14 DDR5 at 5000mhz has a Latency of 40 which means it actually performs worse than the slower DDR4 ATP MEL,CFI,CFII,MEI. Type Ratings B-737, ERJ-190,ERJ-170

Don't forget that both high frequency AND low latency are advantageous. Latency might be high but the frequencies are way higher than we are used to. We shouldn't really be comparing the latency of DDR5 with DDR4. Same thing happened when DDR4 came along, people were panicking because the latency was higher than they were used to. Its a new architecture, so expect frequencies to go even higher and latencies lower in time. Personally, I would go for a Z690 board compatible with DDR4 at this time. New architectures take quite a while to settle down and improve.
November 22, 20214 yr I would wait for now, some of the latest titles do show some performance gain with DDR5 with W11, that`s not unusual as newer titles and games will now make use of the new tech. Going 690 DDR4 will limit you as you cannot go DDR5 later without replacing the Motherboard again. Raymond Fry.
November 22, 20214 yr Author Thank you all. I will not change my board after a few months or a couple of years to get a new RAM. So considering that I use the computer mostly to browse, sim and play (RPG and similar games, no MP games, no shooters) I have to see if the difference between 4 and 5 is significant enough. December 6, 20214 yr You'd be lucky finding any DDR5 anyway. Zero available in the UK and no idea when it will be.
