December 4, 20214 yr I have an 8700K overclocked modestly to 5.00 GHz on all cores. GPU is a RTX 3090, HDD's are NVMe drives. I think all the other hardware (MOBO, RAM) would be replaced if I upgraded, so probably not relevant. I am flying MSFS and DCS only now on a 4k TV. I have been pretty happy with performance, but do reach some stutters. I have not done any formal measures of FPS. If money is not an object (it always is, but assuming), is it worth it to get a new CPU, MOBO, and/or RAM? I think I would be looking at the 11900K, 12700K, or 12900K. Outwardly the 11900K has a high out of the box clock and is cheaper, but in general would expect the 12900K to be a little more future proof as the flagship current gen. I appreciate any thoughts! December 4, 20214 yr I also have a 8700k just at 4.7ghz but with a 980ti and doing 4K high on msfs and getting low 30s. In my honest opinion you should be waiting for AMD Zen 5 or the Intel Meteor Lake processors in 2023, from the 8700k to the 11900k is around a 25% increase, the Alder Lake platform would be perfect for anyone that had a quad core processors before the 7700k. December 4, 20214 yr I would avoid the 11 series like the plague - a small performance gain over the 10 series at the cost of much higher power consumption and heat. As BAW264 has already said your best bet is to wait a while - the 12th Gen Alder Lake is a brand new architecture and it will be a while before the bugs are ironed out. Also DDR5 memory has a way to go to get timings down, not to mention its extremely pricey at them moment. If you do decide to bite the bullet I would recomment the i12-700 over the 900 - there is little real world diffence for your intended scenario and it uses considerably less power. 9800X3D + RTX 4080 + 64GB DDR5
December 4, 20214 yr Author Thank you for the advice. I was a little less eager to pull the trigger this time. Other than my GPU, this build is 4-5 years old. That’s generally about the life span of my flight sim rig. But things are overall running pretty smooth at the moment. Wonder if the hardware cycle is relaxing a little bit for flight sims. December 7, 20214 yr I had a very similar set up to yourself Eric. 8086k Running at 5.1 on all cores with an RTX3090. I have just upgraded to a 12900k with DDR5 and have noticed a nice improvement in MSFS and X-plane 11. Shifty Edited December 7, 20214 yr by No Ice
