Any quick tips for a new VR experimenter

RTX3070, 5600X, 16 GB RAM at 1920x1080 user here, running everything at ultra plus.

Just borrowed a Quest2 for a few days to see how I get on before buying one and find it jittery even at low/med settings and even at high/ultra, the rez looks poor even compared to 1920 x 1080 on a screen. I seem to get what looks like tearing when I move my head too

Due to the short time I have ithe Quest2, little time to research, etc. so was wondering what settings you were all using and maybe a few tips to get me going as after 5 or 6 hours of it, I feel a little underwhelmed and disappointed with it.

Thanks to anyone who can help me on my way a bit.

Ryzen 5800X3D, Nvidia RTX5080 - 32 Gig DDR4 RAM, 1TB & 2 TB NVME drives - Windows 11 64 bit MSFS 2024 Premium Deluxe Edition Resolution 2560 x 1440 (32 inch curved monitor)

If you can, go for the Reverb G2.

I have a quest 2 also but like you said it’s a jitter fest even when linked via the cable. I think it’s due to its inbuilt graphics chip.

The G2 runs directly from the PC GPU. I’m running on a AMD Sapphire 5700 XT with this headset on Ultra/high settings. Res at 100.

VR won’t be as clear as a monitor but you can’t beat the immersion.

Providing the jitters are removed!

Thanks Puddin, I think the Reverb was a bit too expensive when I looked and there's bo doubt that the immersion is great.

I think it will be another 3 or 4 years before VR gets to an acceptable level for me though.  Maybe I should spend my cash on a decent 1440 monitor for the time being.  My 1080 is OK and looks so clear when I come out of VR.

Head tracking might ba another option, I suppose.

Yes VR is not quite there yet, the G2 cooks my face with the high res settings .

But it’s what I prefer, you won’t suffer that with your monitor though!

I run 80% render scaling in MSFS and 1.3 scaling in oculus and that gives me a nice, fluid experience (except in places like LFPG) and I can read screens and gauges in the cockpit quite well.

As with most gadgets, you can probably tweak quite a bit. Your 3070 should actually give an even better experience as I'm on a 2080.

That's how I felt when I bought my Quest last month. Now, I'm never going back to the monitor! It takes a while to experiment with the perfect setting - but I'm managing to get really good clarity and am pretty much judder free - apart from when looking sideways at very low altitudes in dense photogrammetry areas - even then it is pretty good. Was really stuttering horribly before I started to experiment though.

Hard to advise since everyone has different hardware. The Oculus tray tool works for me, with ASW switched off. And I'm using the link cable. It is definitely as clear as running my monitor at 1920/1080. The only thing I have to lean in to read are the G1000/3000 autopilot buttons, due to a bit of white light bleed. I have a 2080ti and an i9 and I'm blown away every time I run it up. If you can post your Nvidia/Oculus Tray Tool/Oculus device settings I might be able to help. VR Sim Guy videos are good - although I think he's using the wireless method & his ASW recommendation didn't work for me with Link.

Thanks, the Quest2 was only borrowed for a few days and has to go back tomorrow, so I'm not going to have any more time to play with the settings.

I did note that with the cable connected, it seemed a bit better and managed to get up to high settings, though ultra was too much for it.  FPS seemed on the edge on high.

Wearing verifocal glasses has not really helped my VR experience either.

I also noted an error in my specs. I now have 32 GB RAM, not 16 as I said, but I really don't think that makes much difference.

It looks like I may hold off going down the VR route for a couple of years and try a slightly larger 1440 monitor (which I have also had the opporrunity to test and was impressed).

Also considering trading in the RTX3070 for a 3080, but wow, have you seen those prices.  Only the kids with very rich dads will be getting those for Christmas 😃

I purchased a G2 yesterday and will be pairing it with my 6800XT and a Ryzen 5800 with 32gig of ram. I imagine I will be back in here asking questions next week after it gets here.

I tried to respond earlier with some screen grabs of my settings for your reference if needed.

Totally screwed up the message!

6800XT that is a GPU , you should be very smooth with that.

I have found that not using a custom render setting in Open XR gives me less stuttering.

Also lately my GPU  latest driver 30.0.13037.1003 is unstable compared to my previous (driver timeouts), I am rolling back, once I can find it! I mention this just in case you get the same issue.

Happy flying,

Bill

I received my G2's but things haven't started out well for me. I installed OpenXR and enabled it to work with WMR. I then hooked up the G2's and after trying numerous USB slots found one that caused the G2's to be recognized. I was really surprised that the Mini-USB on my m/b would not work. Started the Setup process but cannot get past 1. Getting the controllers to Connect. They do Pair but will not connect. 2. I cannot get past the screen where you have to look at the Diamond to just use mouse and keyboard.

I have read the issues about the original cable having issues with AMD systems but the newer cable cures that. H/P only had 2 in stock so I have one of those on the way now. I am fairly tech savvy but this is looking like it is more complicated that I imagined. I hope it is worth it

ps. I did try to start up MSFS with the WMR screen still at the Diamond page with the music playing in the background but MSFS would not even fully start
