Switch nVIDIA to AMD

Ok guys, whatever I tried so far is helping nothing. This sim behaves utterly strange since I switched GPU. Might consider a full reinstall, seriously...

I did try to warn you 😆

I still dont get why the same CPU is perfectly capable to sustain 30-40 FPS in 100% of the scenarios with the 1080ti and now, with the 6900XT, it should be suddenly responsible for drops down to 20 FPS. I have never seen 20 FPS with the 1080ti, this tells me that the CPU can always maintain more FPS. But then why not with the 6900XT? Makes no sense to me, sorry...

Maybe you have a defective GPU. I ditched mine on my new PC and went for another brand of card.

Yeah, maybe and it's what I ended up suspecting  for a while and I spent almost a week stress testing and stabilty testing the machine and could never get it to fall over. In the end a fresh windows and driver install fixed it. Something software/driver related was all screwed up and only showed in flight sim. Best he tries the fresh windows installation before sending hard to get hold and over priced GPU's back to the retailer in exchnge for a long wait I think.

Yes.. My first card I stressed it every way imaginable and it always passed with flying colors except trying to run MSFS.

I am pretty sure that my GPU is fine, as it delivers what it should. I would rather say that there is really an issue with the switch of GPUs that MSFS does not like, or an AMD driver thing I dont get hold on. Just to illustrate the strange behaviour, some observations I made during my "testing" session yesterday:

sitting on FSDT LSZH tarmac, FPS were about 50-60 with a 130 render scale. Indicating 90% or more GPU limit in the graph. Almost smooth, but as soon as I was panning around, those annoying stutters with visible CPU lag spikes in the graph. So I tried to lower some settings, finally I even turned the preset "low end", just to see how this affects the "phenomenon". I get 140+ FPS with "low end", but guess what, still CPU spikes visible when panning around, but of course way less noticable. But then, when switching back to the custom "ultra", with the settings dialed down as suggested here, bam, again hovering only around 30-40 FPS with huge stutters, graph indicating almost constantly a "limited by main thread" situation. And that's it, never got it back to the initial 50-60 FPS, even not with lowering resolution scale back down to 100.

I am at a lost. The next time I see 50-60 FPS with only minimal stutters, I simply freeze my settings and never touch them again 😉

Windows re-install is almost never needed, in my 25+ years of experience with self-built rigs and simming, I only had to re-install Windows when I did a massive HW upgrade (CPU, motherboard and RAM) or some really critical failures that had nothing to do with replaced HW. Certainly I never had to reinstall Windows due to a GPU exchange... But maybe I have to reinstall the sim from scratch, before I do this, I will still try some stuff.

I have the same issue now. My Nvidia Titan XP suddenly died so I have to collect another GPU. The 3080 is still to expensive for me so I swapped also to the Red team but with a brand-new RX 6800XT Founders edition for a aggressive pricetag so 300 bucks (Euro) cheaper than a 10Gb 3080. The TitanXP was on my old 1080P G-Sync monitor in 2D mode doing 60fps in Ultra and in VR Reverb version1 with High settings 27 fps. Due to windows start-up problems with the AMD and G-Sync monitor (Blue don't like Red) I switched to also a new Freesync monitor (Samsung 4K) and have now a stutter fest in 2D and VR. in 1080P 2D modus 30fps and 4K modes 10????? fps. VR runs a little better but still lots of stutter. I also tried the latest OpenXR Toolkit (1.5) with both scalers tried (Nvidia and AMD) and receive max 30fps in not to dense areas. My TitanXP was doing 27 fps average in VR.

I installed a complete fresh Windows10 21H2 version and all the drivers are up to date. I'm running on a Z390UD board with a i5-9600i cpu and 3000Mhz 32 Gb RAM and all running on SSD. PSu is a new 850W Gold

There are a lot of stories going around about the 6800XT and 6900XT so I don't now what to do now.

My qestion to the poster is, Have you managed already your problem or do you have ditched the 6900XT ?

I have a 6900XT see my specs. I am cpu limited, what I do is stress the gpu so that I become GPU limited. My native monitor resolution is 3440x1440. With Amd Radeon virtual super resolution  I bring this to 3840x2160, and then up with renderscale in MSFS to 4800x2025.

Now at Halifax full overcast and 100%AIG traffic I am running 38 - 40FPS, no stutters.Maybe because I use the Radeon alt.Vsync and my monitors freesync. Although the freesync of my monitor only starts at 48fps....

Not really, at least in the cockpit, stutters are now minimal, but in the chase cam, if moving around quickly, the CPU spikes remain, no matter how much I move the load to the GPU. Not entirely happy with the 6900XT, but then, now I have this card and I have to deal with it, it seems...

I have a GPU limited system (see sig) and MSFS seems to prefer that.

correct, however you can always make your Gpu the limiting factor ( crank up the resolution)
