Reducing aircraft texture size

Featured Replies

Hello everyone. I've been reducing my aircraft texture sizes for FSX and P3D4 with no problem at all. I mean, usually, 4k textures are too much for my systems (specs in signature), specially when I have just a 1920x1080 screen. I used this program for resizing these textures, and adding mips (unlike FS9, it gives me a better image quality without abusing of AA):

Ordenador Optimizer Textures
https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/12801

With that, I've resampled aircraft textures to either 2048 or 1024, and AI textures to 1024, so that my 1650 does not fall to its knees. Now, those 8K repaint I find sometimes for MSFS are simply too much. Unfortunately, Ordenador can´t process anything beyond 4096 textures. Does anybody know of any software I can use to batch reduce these 8K textures to something more manageable by those not lucky enough to have a 3090?

Faststone Imageviewer
If you have Adobe, Adobe Brigde
Irfanview

Can't you just use the Texture Resolution setting under Graphics in MSFS and lower that? I know it is a global setting but should should give the same benefits without all the additional effort and easy to revert back if you upgrade your gpu.

Look for Texconv.exe

you'll have to set up a bat file.

Thank you all for your responses. I've been trying all your options.

Tried both; unfortunately I couldn´t make them work with DDS. I don´t have Adobe.

Take paint.net, easy to resize the textures.

The one that worked the most. While I could batch load all the DDS I wanted, I had to save them one by one, which neglects somehow its utility.

I've already done that. However, there are some painters that still think that aircraft textures should not be mipped, as if this was still FS9. In those unmipped textures, this setting will do nothing, and I'll still have the full 8K texture I don´t need.

I'll take a deep look at that. I've used some BAT files with the old Imagetool, so it shouldn't be an issue.

Any texture guide for MSFS? I remember that in FS9 user aircraft you should use unmipped DXT3 BMPs (and if you needed a smooth dégradé, you could use 32-bit BMPs), and mipped DXT5 DDS files for FSX (and thus P3D).
