he was constantly jumping up us, uncomfortably so given his size.

My daughter had 60 pound Labrador that she had since it was a puppy.  When it was little they had it on their laps all the time.   It was a very friendly dog and wanted to sit on the lap of everyone who sat down in their living room.  It was very uncomfortable to have such a big dog trying to jump up on your lap.  My daughter thought it was 'cute'.

The tires are worn.  The shocks are shot.  The steering is wobbly.  But the engine still runs fine.

The breed is well known for being hyperactive. I recall they may have said something about trying training but the trainer gave up. 😃

I wasn't there when my beloved Scratchy was put down, and to this day I regret it. I was disgusted with myself. I knew I'd be very upset and wimped out. I think abouit it a lot and when I do it upsets me.

My regret is similar, but somewhat opposite. When our Zena was in her final weeks I wrestled greatly with the notion of "when" was the "right" time to put her down.  I consulted the vet, trusted animal loving friends etc, etc.  Anyway, when I arrived home on Christmas day from family, Zena was not there to greet me as usual and my heart sank.  I discovered her under her bed, next the to the floor heat register - her favorite spot.

To this day, I feel I "wimped" out, not making a timely decision on her behalf and may have caused her undue pain/suffering along with the indignity of passing alone.  I also think about it a lot and like you.... when I do, it still upsets me.
