Where Next With P3Dv5.3 HF2?

Featured Replies

I'm using the last nvidia driver with no issues, but as you well know software is linked to hardware, so getting last driver and Windows 11 (even 10) with old hardware could be one of the reasons of the problem. Last CPU with old GPU or viceversa is the same, the infame bottleneck. So, my sim is now running impressing better than ever, no stutters. 70 fps outside, 65 fps inside, and I'm testing with FSLABS A320. So I will let you know what I have and what I do with that. I am not trying to say that you have to apply all I have done, just telling my experience.

  1. I moved from Intel 11700k to Ryzen 9 5900X. Undervolted with PBO2 bios option. You need a good AIO cooler for that Ryzen. I run everything sim and OS related on SSDs. RAM 32 Gb 3200 Mhz.
  2. I upgraded 1080 ti to 3080 ti (you dont really need a 3080 ti what I recommend it the more VRAM your budget can afford). Undervolted and curve optimized with MSI Afterburner.
  3. I left behind the times trying to run the sim in 4k or even 2k. I bought a Full HD monitor with GSync and HDR technology.
  4. Installed a fresh Windows 11, upgraded from 10 was a pain for the sim. Tunned windows 11 with all recommendations over the web. Game mode off, record captures off, etc. What I mean  is, anything that uses my resources without my permission is off.
  5. Tunned nvidia control panel, basically: Prefer Maximum Performance, Low Latency Ultra, Vertical Sync Fast.
  6. Installed a fresh version of P3Dv5.3, then upgrade client with the hotfixes.
  7. I have all ORBX improvements, Chaseplane, ENVTEX + ENVSHADE (helped me with the darkcabin issue), AS and some airports. In the sim High to Ultra settings.
  8. I don't tweak anything manually in the sim, I mean adding or removing options from the config file. I don't use Affinity Mask or Process Lasso.
  9. I don't use addons aren't well updated for v5.
  10. And that's it or everything I remember right now.

Results:

GPU: 68° - 63% - 1800Mhz - 0.9 Volts
MEM: 4800 Mb - 9500 Mhz
CPU: 68° - 10% - 4950 Mhz - 76.8 Volts
RAM: 15869 Mb
D3D12: Between 70 FPS and 40 FPS (California area)

Wait till V6 and see which addons will work with that ?.

At least updates for P3D are not mandatory.

Yes you do. It’s created by v5.3HF2. Look at your Prepar3D.cfg right at the top.

You might want to check if you have the optimum values by reading this...

https://www.avsim.com/forums/topic/615625-optimizing-affinity-mask-settings-for-p3d-v53-and-later/

I’m surprised you’re only running at 1920*1080 with a 3080Ti. Greatly underused.

Ray, thank you for your comment. I didn't realize there is a default setting for Affinity Mask now. What I tried to point is I never manipulate those files. This is what I have there (default and working fine for me):

[JobScheduler]
AffinityMask=16777215
P3DCoreAffinityMask=16777215

Regarding the 1920 x 1080 comment, I have the three monitors, all asus ROG monitors, I mean 1K, 2K and 4K, sometimes I fly on 2K, rarely on 4K, I have tested it off course. The issue for me here is that my 1K monitor has GSYNC and HDR features, 2K only GSYNC and 4K none to these features. What I don't like is that I mainly work in my PC, software developer, and FSim is a Hobbie, I don't enjoy seeing all my windows ultra small letter and icons on resolutions above 1K, I have scaled the screen but I don't like the results. That's why these days I'm using 1K, firstly testing with real HDR color settings. I normally record the flights, sometimes live stream, I use the  RTX features for mic noise reduction, edit videos with Adobe Premiere, etc. There is where the 3080 ti and the 5900X are used. But for sure is still underused. That GPU is a beast.

I will try some affinity mask tests for my processor. What do you think about those numbers? These are my best cores:

@mdelacruzperu, understood regarding your monitors setup. I thought you were using a single monitor.

Regarding the best settings for the Affinity Mask without seeing the rest of the JobScheduler section it’s hard to say. Based on that value you have a 12 core CPU with Hyperthreading enabled.

That’s beyond my understanding. But if the sim is running well for you I would leave well alone.

Hi Ray,

Thanks for your response.

My monitor has a refresh rate of 60.  Wondering if I should use the Nvidia Control Panel and set Vertical Sync to Adaptive (half refresh rate) to get to 30. If I did this, I would assume that I don't have to turn on Vertical Sync in P3D graphics but I still need to set frame rate to unlimited?

Steve

Hi Steve,

I use Adaptive in NCP, no VS in P3D. My monitor has a refresh rate of 75. I set fps in P3D at 38, about 1/2 the monitor rate. More often than not, my fps is rock steady, sometimes dropping into twenties or high teens with complex scenery and/pr aircraft. Of course, this all depends on more than the monitor...it is your entire computer setup...good luck.

I agree. The Locked fps slider setting creates look-ahead frames and when there is at least one completed frame available in the buffer they are output at precise time intervals giving the flattest line on the time delta graphs.

However it is worth pointing out, a problem with generating look-ahead frames is that this more easily pushes the MainThreadScheduler to 100% core time which might cause an issue on some systems with HT enabled and poor AM choice, also heat dissipation might be a concern and perhaps battery life on laptops could be reduced. Also, if the time to build frames falls short of the locked time interval there are no look-ahead frames, it is just vsync'd to the half refresh in NCP and in those cases it is slightly smoother to have VSync=On in P3D Display Settings as well,  but there's not much in it. That's why I usually recommend half refresh in NCP, and in P3D VS=On and Unlocked, not quite as good but less issues to confront the unwary.

4    С05    С02    С01
5    С06    С06    C10
6    С02    С05    С06

I would use this setting. This puts the primary task on core 4 and the other two main tasks on cores 5 and 6 and this also keeps scenery tasks off of the three main cores. The heaviest scenery tasks are doubled up on cores 1, 2 and 3:

[JobScheduler]
AffinityMask=16774527
P3DCoreAffinityMask=16774527
MainThreadScheduler=6
RenderThreadScheduler=7
FrameWorkerThreadScheduler=8

This works really well in testing and handles big scenery loads much better than the default setting.

Incidentally, the P3D v5.3 default setting for 12 core SMT are;

[JobScheduler]
AffinityMask=16777215
P3DCoreAffinityMask=16777215
MainThreadScheduler=0
RenderThreadScheduler=2
FrameWorkerThreadScheduler=4

This unfortunately puts the main task on the first logical processor of the first core with the strongest scenery task on the second logical processor of the first core. These two tasks on the first core are competing for the bandwidth of that one core. So when you fly towards heavy scenery loads that brings down the performance of the main task when both loads exceed the capacity of the core. Otherwise it works OK most of the time.

I hope that helps you.

MEM: 4944 Mb - 9502 Mhz
CPU: 66° - 11% - 4950 Mhz - 81.8 Volts (better temps in this airport)
RAM: 15494 Mb
D3D12: 62 FPS (an increment of ~6 FPS in this airport)

Last numbers at Ibiza (very light scenery)

GPU: 68° - 63% - 1800Mhz - 0.9 Volts
MEM: 4800 Mb - 9500 Mhz
CPU: 68° - 10% - 4950 Mhz - 76.8 Volts
RAM: 15869 Mb
D3D12: Between 70 FPS and 40 FPS (California area)
