MSFS 2020 Screen Lag

Featured Replies

Hello all!

I have a 144hz Asus Monitor and my FPS are locked to 45 and stable but for some reason when I pan around there seems to be like a lag or tear. It's a bit hard to describe but its a bit weird when I pan around. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks for the help!

Make sure you have VSYNC set to ON. Otherwise, you'll get screen tearing. I keep MSFS locked to 30FPS because it matches the refresh rate of my monitor, which is a 4K TV. I also keep VSYNC set to ON, which links the output of MSFS to the external display.

Thank you! So set this to ON or FAST?

Avoid using the MSFS Program Setting when in NV Control Panel--just go straight to Global.  Next...

  1. Leave all Global settings at default except this one under 3D settings:  Low Latency, which you can set to Ultra which will improve panning behavior, and there is no downside w/ your hardware--I have essentially the same.
  2. If you have a Gsync display, that's all you need to do as Gsync can be thought of as a 'dynamic vsync' if you will.  If you don't have a Gsynd display then...
  3. In MSFS, set VSYNC to ON.
  4. I recommend first trying to set your screen's refresh rate to 120mHz using NV Control Panel's Change Resolution control.  If your screen will do 120mHz, then set the frame limit in MSFS to 20, which will lock frames to 40fps because the '20' is actually a 1/3 divisor for your screen's refresh rate.  If you set it at 30 instead, frames will limit to 1/2 of 120Mhz, or 60fps.  In my experience, using all Ultra settings, 40fps is about the max sustainable, and even then not quite akwats,  I use a screen refresh of 60mHz, and then use the 30 divisor so end up with 30fps, which is fine for my needs.  My screen will only do 60Hz maximum.  I use the 787X HD mod and it, and the upcoming PMDG NG3 will sap frames enough to where 30fps really will be maximum I can sustain in most all scenarios.

Thanks! So couple of thoughts.

1. I play a LOT of other games as well that's why i don't set to GLOBAL.

2. My monitor is GSYNC compatible and not a true 100% monitor. (Certified as G-SYNC Compatible, delivering a seamless, tear-free gaming experience by enabling VRR (variable refresh rate) by default.) With that said, should I set VSYNC in MSFS then?

I suggest do what Noel suggested, set you monitor to 120hz and then within the sim set vsync to 20, works great for me. Also make sure you have "off screen terrain pre caching" set to "Ultra" in sim settings.

I use a 4K Sony 75" TV. It works beautifully with MSFS. Any 4K TV these days will work perfectly. There's no need to spend a fortune anymore.

75" Nice! I use a Samsung 55" myself. Reason I was asking is I see you use 30hz with Vsync and I know a trick that works for me and I'd like to see if it works for anyone else using a 4K TV.

It's simple, if you are interested in trying it. In the expert setting of my TV there is setting called Judder Reduction. I don't know if Sony uses it or what Its called but one my TV you can either turn it off or set it anywhere from 1 to 10. I find if I set my refresh rate to 29hz in NCP with Vsync in MSFS on there is a huge difference for the better in smoothness with the TV's Judder reduction filter set to 10 which is the maximum. The difference is so striking, I can have the setting bar from the TV menu open on the screen while flying and using the arrow buttons on the remote to slide this settings back and forward between 0 and 10 and watch the motion on the screen go from smooth to supper smooth and back again as I adjust the setting. Anyway, though it would be something you would be interested in trying. If you do let me know if it works for you.

Nope, you shouldn't be enabling Vsync because you're already syncing but variably, so *should* result in the highest frame rate w/ teh benefits of what Vsync does at a fixed frame rate.  That being said it's NOT the same process, so try both and see which is best.   A downside of Vsync is that when the locked frame limti is not able to be met stuttering ensures.  This is why even though often I can easily do 40-60fps in some siutaitons, but landing a long flight into Tly Tampa KLAS will only maintain 30 fps, hence I Vsync at a divisor of 30 w/ a 60Hz screen.
