Help with deleting liveries please

Featured Replies

I've been going through my installation to remove unwanted liveries (less for loading time speed or drive space, more for simply removing what I won't use), but some don't seem to have the option to remove them unless I'm doing something wrong.

Option 1:

I go into Content Manager and type in what aircraft I am looking for (e.g. "Airbus" or "C152") and scroll down to what I want to delete in order to select it. Sometime I will click on the box to the right of an aircraft and the liveries are shown.  But many aircraft only have the Information box in that position, so I can't show any of its liveries.

Option 2:

Another option (for 3rd party aircraft) might be to use Addons Linker to open each aircraft's folder (just for simplicity - it could be done just using Windows File Explorer alone) and delete the relevant livery folders inside SimObjects > Airplanes* but a) I'm not sure it's as simple as that (does a config file need to be edited as well for instance?) and b) there don't always seem to be clearly defined folders for each livery version inside the Airplanes folder.

Have I missed something simple?

(* As an example, inside the Airplanes folder for the Twin Otter are folders such as "AS_Aircraft_DHC6-300_Amphibian_Pax" but I don't know if simply deleting a folder like that would remove the livery and do so without causing other issues).

In content manager, near the upper right, are two small "boxes" that can be clicked. One shows a list of "packages", the other shows a list of all individual items. Click the second one. Then start scrolling looking for liveries. Click each one (check mark appears to the left of it). Once you're satisfied with your selections, click delete. Be patient, it can take a while.

I've done this for all the liveries, bush trips, landing challenges, discovery flights and a few other things I'm never going to use. Done properly, they will not be reinstalled when an update is released. However, with WU's (and some SU's), you may have to go and delete anything you don't want that is new with the update.

For third party addons bought outside of the Marketplace go into the aircraft.cfg inside of the relevant aircraft folder and remove the liveries you don't want. (You might have to choose notepad to open them with first but that won't damage anything) You'll have to check the thumbnail in the relevant texture folder to make sure its the right one. The main 'Texture' folder should not be deleted as it will probably contain files that the other texture folders refer to but deleting the texture folders you don't want can save quite a bit of space.

Make sure the order in the aircraft.cfg is kept sequential - '0' '1' etc because if you have three liveries and delete number two then your aircraft.cfg could go from '0' to '2' which means '2' would never show up in your hanger.

Keep a back up until you are sure you have removed the ones you meant to!

I've done this for everything except the Kodiaks where I've only removed a few of the lurid ones and kept the rest. Usually I only keep one.

I rename all my add-on folders. All liveries are called 'livery-c172-*' (with c172 obviously describing type). Same applies for mods and aircraft. It's a small extra effort when adding them, but groups everything together and makes removal a breeze. Also use Adonis Linker, and have all of above in categorised sub-folders. Hope this helps.

If referring to default liveries with each purchased (or standard) aircraft, then @6297J is the way to go.

@JimBrown

That's what I've done where possible, but many addons don't seem to allow it.

@6297J

Thanks, pretty much confirms the sort of thing I imagined was necessary.

@lupedelupe

I'll bear that in mind too.

Adonis Linker

Does that add this to the sim?

It's a slow process, but I'm making my way steadily through my aircraft. In most cases it has worked fine - mostly cutting out all but one livery - but I have run into an issue with a small number of aircraft. One example is the Antonov AN-225, where I deleted the liveries for all but the genuine Ukrainian one. The config only makes reference to that one and I deleted the folders for the other textures. However, in the sim, the livery selections for the deleted ones are still there, just missing their thumbnails.

I loaded up one of the deleted textures to test it, and sure enough, the cockpit is pink with just the instruments displayed properly, and the exterior model is entirely white (including the windows etc), as you would expect. Is there something I can change to stop the deleted options showing up in the selection screen? It's easy enough just to ignore those without thumbnails, but it looks messy. And it's more annoying when the number of liveries is too great to see them all without scrolling, because I have blank liveries with retained liveries appearing further down the list (even though I renumbered the retained liveries to be sequential).
