KHAF Approach from the "other" direction...in a DA62

Featured Replies

In my previous post, I'd successfully completed the "RNAV (GPS) RWY 12" approach (although with a few harrowing final moments...🙂...) ...in ill-advised and artificially injected adverse-weather conditions. On the Final, the bulky and heavy Grand Caravan C208B had never felt so cumbersome... (BTW, here is a 3m:16s video of a (RW) IFR approach to KHAF Rwy 12, if you wish to view, please search for "IFR Approach to Half Moon Bay (KHAF)". I read there in the Intoduction, "Flying as safety pilot for a friend of mine while he keeps his IFR skills current by shooting some IFR approaches. This was our second attempt at the GPS Z approach to Runway 12, after we went missed on the first attempt (after hitting minimums and not being able to see the runway) ..."...I recall, per my previous post, how I too was momentarily blinded in the last couple of miles...no go-around, though....🙂......so, apparently, this Rwy 12 KHAF approach is indeed a challenge in RW, especially when compounded by adverse weather...

In this post, before saying goodbye to Orbx's Half Moon Bay Airport (KHAF), I wished to approach the Airport from the "other" (i.e., south) direction via "RNAV (GPS) RWY 30", but, this time, with a nimble, swift, and sleek Diamond DA62...(see pictures below)...the a/c manufacturer touts..."The Ultimate Flying Machine"..."The DA62 moves more passengers and equipment farther and faster than anything else in its class..."..."Ever wonder what it would feel like to open up those sleek gull-wing doors and step into a DA62...?"...Oh well...see one (static) image (shot #1) below with the exits open...

The Rwy 30 approach from the south is probably, I'm thinking, less challenging because, unlike the Rwy 12 approach, in the short final, one is flying over the wide (clear) expanse of the (cresent-shaped, see shot #8) Half Moon bay (I mean, the body of water, not the town, which, btw, has given the town its name), so, the flight does not appear so near to the encroaching coastal mountains, as is the case for Rwy 12 approach.

I did practice the "RNAV (GPS) RWY 30" approach once on the GARMIN Trainer (see shot #4) before attempting the actual (albeit still virtual) approach with the DA62. My motto being..."Never leave home, for a virtual approach, without running through the Trainer once..."...🙂...in fact, it's a nice and practical way to familiarize oneself with the fixes, altitudes, and the descent profile of the intended approach...that just a pre-viewing of the IAP chart (duly provided by Orbx documentation) cannot provide...

So, I've tracked the waypoints (1) JUMDA (IAF) @ 3,800 ft, (2) WOHLI (FAF) @ 3,300 ft etc. (see GTN 750 and G1000 shots). The approach is activated on the G1000 as provided by Carenado in this a/c (see shot #7), but once the Rwy was in sight (with perfect weather this time), I've myself (visually) controlled the SPD/HDG/VS for touchdown, see landing shots, (please note that there are no convenient LOC/ILS signals available at KHAF). Hope you enjoy this collection of pictures of the sharp-looking DA-62, on takeoff from Rwy 12 and on approach to Rwy 30 at Half Moon Bay airport.

Thanks for viewing...!! Good flying...!
