PMDG (again)

Featured Replies

So, I completed my first full flight with the PMDG 737-700. Here are my (non-technical) observations. I won't comment on the flight model coz, come on, PMDG has been at it for over 20 years. I they haven't gotten it right by now....

Flight was from KBFI to CYUL (Montreal), at a cruising altitude of 37000 feet, with a flight time from take off to touchdown of about 4 hours and 25 minutes. I flew an ILS approach to RW 24R in Montreal. Because my 737 flying skills are a bit rusty, I didn't configure everything correctly for approach and landing, but I got the plane down in one piece.

1. The good:

- exceptional ground handling. It really feels like the tires are firmly planted on the ground. None of that floaty feeling you get with other MSFS airplanes.
- rudder inputs very responsive and smooth, even with my not exactly high-end thrustmaster rudder pedals.
- if trim is set correctly as per the FMC (I recommend enabling tool tips to set the trim), rotation is smooth.
- behaves as expected through all phases of flight. I didn't encounter any show stoppers or "bugs"
- very good cockpit lighting
- plenty of config. options via the FMC
- decent performance, even on my rig that was built pretty much in another century
- I enjoyed the sounds

2. The not so good

missing efb
- cumbersome simbrief integration
- missing cabin as part of the interior model
- texture work is mediocre to terrible in places.
- manuals are mediocre - PMDG used to excel at their manuals, especially their tutorial flights - the one for the MSFS version starts you out with all engines running.😕

Overall verdict: Recommended

I was only interested in the BBJ version, since I don't have the time for proper airlines operation, and I feel I got my money' s worth. Hoping that PMDG will come through with their promises in regards to the efb and visual upgrades.
If you're interested in a long-range business jet, this is probably the plane to get.

I’ve been flying sims since the early 90’s and the -700 is the first tubeliner I’ve ever purchased. Yesterday, I completed a flight from KOAK to KPHX, that was copied from a real world Southwest route, and from beginning to end, it was one of the most satisfying sim experiences I’ve ever had. I even threw in an autoland for the heck of it! Count me in as a PMDG guy moving forward.
