Converting FSX textures to FS9

Hello kuax

Thanks for your reply.

I mean aircraft textures not scenery

If will need to convert them to a bmp format, Fs9 used either dxt3 or 32 or 24 bit format bmp files

You can do this with this freeware program https://www.mwgfx.co.uk/programs/dxtbmp.htm

However depending on the model textures, you will need to flip both texture and alpha layer before saving them into bmp from dds format

Warning: 24-bit bmps are only for panels. Use 32-bit or DXT3 textures for aircraft and sceneries.

I downloaded the program and inserted the FSX texture and choose the output to be extended DXT3 and the output is Bmp( DXT3): 2048x2048- 16 bit

It didn't work.

by the sounds of it, you may have to modify the model, to accept bmp textures. It sounds like its only accepting dds format

What model are you trying to work with?

the freeware program MCX will allow you to change the models texture formats and also do patch texture conversions.

However you will need to install the FS9 SDK to get most of the core files for MCX to work

AFAIK, FS9 does not read textures greater than 1024 pixels. You'll have to resize the bitmap.

Confused yet? Me too. Sounds like no one in here really knows how to do it.

For converting Textures from and to fs9: TextureManager

You may convert to several file formats, resolutions and add or remove mipmaps. Mass conversions also possible.

I am sure plenty do. If you use the dxtbmp software mentioned above, it is as simple as selecting your choice in "Save As".

I hadn't got involved with this before because I really don't see the point in trying to make FSX stuff work with FS9. There are plenty of dedicated FS9 add-ons out there to use which will avoid the chances of mistakes.

But of you really must, load in dxtbmp and "flip with alpha". If the texture is over 1024 x 1024 pixels, export to preferred editor, resize, reload after edit, and Save As . . .

The best thing you can do with FSX aircraft is to . . . (shhhhh) . . . fly them in FSX. Hands up who thought I was going to say shred the files. 🙂

With all due respect John, I disagree. I understand clearly why FS9'ers would want to use FSX stuff. For example, A.I. aircraft. Many of the newer aircraft models, i.e. Airbus A-350, were never developed for FS9. Many others as well. Several of us like porting these aircraft over to our AI traffic files within FS9.

Furthermore, I have come to learn how to convert FSX airport scenery for use in FS9. And my findings are these FSX airports, while much more rich in detail than FS9 airports, provide better frame rates as well for whatever reason.

I liken this somewhat to FS9 European airport designers. In my opinion, their airport sceneries far exceed those developed by American designers. For one example, and there are many others, lets take Imaginesim's FS9 KATL airport. And let's compare that to Aerosoft's EDDF 2008. The EDDF airport is crystal smooth (frame rates) and far exceeds the latest Imaginesim ATL release in detail and environment. ATL on the otherhand, far less dense and I exhibit micro stutters. Additionally, many of us use Airport Enhancement Services (AES). In almost all the European sceneries I have, the ground support trucks & equipment stop as you are pulling your aircraft into the parking spot. Not one American designed airport does this. The vehicles will race you to the parking spot and crash into you. 😄

Not trying to pick a fight. Just my observations.

Respectfully,

Michael

I might have the wrong end of the stick but I think the question is how to convert FSX textures to use in FS9, when the developer released both a FSX and FS9 version of the aircraft model.  There are plenty of examples of that out there.  For instance, there are many FSX textures for models such as QW 757 and RJ, or the IFly 737 that will work perfectly fine if converted to bmp format for use with the FS9 model.  Another example that comes to mind is the Carenado Cessna Caravan.

Michael is right about conversion of FSX airports to FS9.  Conversion of the textures is one part of the process but tools like MCX provide the means to expand the already massive number of airports available to those of us still using FS9.  The reason you'd want to do the conversions is because the there is no FS9 addon available (as amazing as that seems) or the FSX version is more up-to-date or more detailed.

Michael is also right about textures for AI traffic models.  Many of the painters stopped making FS9 bmp versions a long time ago.  In fact many no longer make FSX versions either and focus on what they call HD versions meant for P3D and even MSFS.  Most of the traffic models continue to be based on AI traffic aircraft originally made for FS9 so the textures work perfectly fine if converted.  Conversion of textures is about the only way to keep traffic reasonably up to date these days for FS9 users.  But, as Michael pointed out, FS9 users do not have models of airliners introduced into service in the last few years.  We can not expect a FS9 version of these models to be developed.  So far that is only a small handful of aircraft types.  In the meantime conversion of these HD textures is a really simple proposition with a tool made by Mathew Ministry (aka Richard Faith).  I cannot recommend more highly his AI texture conversion application, which can be found at the other place.  Search for the file called dds2bmp_formatconverter.zip.  Conversion is a simple matter of dragging and dropping the FSX/P3D texture folder to the application, and presto you get all the textures fully converted to FS9 format including alpha (where applicable for sat domes etc.).

Thank you kaux.

Finally I managed to convert FSX to be used in fs9 by using texture manager and dxtbmp

I wanted to convert to FS9 as too many AI (newest)didn't exist in fs9
