Black SQ Analogue King Air - Avionics Dark after Takeoff

Featured Replies

After watching tutorials, referring to the Black SQ Manuals, and using various checklists, I can successfully start the Analogue King Air (battery start), enter a flight plan, and take off.   But then the avionics go dark.   The avionic master is "ON", and other switches are per checklists.   I cannot find any electrical faults, and there are no warnings indicated.  Global Failures Rate is set to "No Failures".   Any ideas what I could be doing wrong?

Are the generators switched on? What do the dc generator load gauges and volt meter say?

If the zvionics go out after a while that is likely because the battery is depleted, which means either the engines arent generating electricity, some of the bus switches are set wrong or you are using more watts thzn the engines can provide (electric heater).

Allso make sure all the circuit breakers are in!

Thanks for the hints.  Embarrassed to say I was not getting a full view of annunciators (some hidden by levers).   The problem seems to have been a need to reset a generator.  I must have been switching them on without first resetting.   Anyway, I found a warning on the annunciator panel (behind a throttle lever) to clear by resetting the generator.  So, you are correct, I was depleting the battery.  Now I will also check the gauges, and I have set a custom view of the annunciator panel.   Love this Black SQ King Air, and what a handful to fly!     Thanks again for your reply.

It’s easy to miss and doubly extra hard by the poor ui of that control section of an otherwise exquisite aircraft.  I hope the dev will clean it up a bit.

Yep, I don't know if resetting is required for all generators or if it is just a King Air thing. At least this (and the analog caravan IIRC) are the first aircraft where this is needed. Easy to overlook.

It is a lovely aircraft but I still have to get used to failures. Yesterday one of the engines developed a failure and I (over)reacted by switching of that engine. The issue (L ENG INST POWER) wasn't mentioned in the checklist. and without a complete POH I had to guess what to do. Switching of the engine did not prove the best choice since after that my cockpit lights first started to flicker and then to shut off completely.
Since it was night that was a bit of an inconvenience so I desperately tried to get the lights back on. Flicking switches in the dark proved to be disastrous because I lost all electrical power and while the autopilot quit the Kingair quicky spun out of control with just the one engine, while I was still trying to figure out what whent wrong in the first place.

A great experience which I would rather not repeat in a real aircraft.

I think the bus tie switch would have helped keep the lights on in this case.

Thanks for the tip. I was looking for something like that. Now I am in my comfy chair reading the manual, i might have switched it to "OPEN" where I should have set it to "MAN CLOSED".

The good news is that I can trigger the malfunction on purpose an recreate tbe flight in daylight. Hopefully I will mzke more rational choices the 2nd time.

I hope Blacksquare will enhance some more default aircraft. The King air is now great fun to fly.

Don't you guys set up your own views when you first purchase an airplane?  I thought everyone here did that. (?)

I always set up custom views.  It's a hassle initially but once I set them up 1 time that's all I ever have to do.  And I control them using my Logitech game controller.

I just move the cockpit camera around with alt and shift + the arrow keys.
