Assigning engine sounds only to external speakers?

Featured Replies

The subject line pretty much says it all.

From what I can see, I can only assign all sounds (engines, cockpit, environment) together. What I'd like to do is just have the engines only played over the external speakers while all other sounds are played through my headset.

No sure that's achievable...

As far as I am aware you can only separate ATC from all other noises...but that is quite realistic anyway..

Perhaps. But I'd like to direct the engine sounds (primarily of my B-17, P-51, and other military prop warbirds) to a set of external speakers with a large subwoofer, so that I can get a more deeper, resonating thrumming sound. When I currently do that, having the sound of a switch being toggled sounds like a gunshot, with other cockpit and environmental sounds equally loud.

Masterius - I am afraid not with the current sound regime of P3D and the sound files. The aircraft sounds are generated in a single batch file and the ATC comes from a separate program source. All the sliders do is change the level of a groups of sound wav's from the config file. If you look at a sound config file you will see that engine sounds are different to environmental sounds which are a different wav, the same as environmental sounds are as well (many are standard sounds wavs and are just scripted via the config file) How complex the sounds are depends on the effort the developer took with the sound package. They are all in turn tied to the aircraft performance parameters via the aircraft config and air file. Power up sound goes up and plays a different set of wavs in a sequence. Those parameters are set in the sound config file. If you could spilt them as you would like to you would have to have separate sound folders for the various regimes, engine, cockpit, environmental and ATC. and a programming script within the P3D or any other sim for that matter that was capable of reading and pulling together these - if that was the case which it is not then you could direct the sound to various outputs.

As far as I am aware flight sim sound files have never been compiled or mixed as stereophonic sound where the sound is split into channels. The loudness level of the various aircraft sounds are controlled via the parameters in the sound config. You can add more files being played such as 1 engine v 2 or 4 engine sounds but I do not think you can get the program that is P3D to split them into separate channels even if you could compile a sound config and group of wav files to do that (which I am sure any competent audio engineer could do). FWIW.

A final note MS have messed about with the sound controls in Windows to cater for Zoom Skype calls etc so that a form of muting goes on to muffle one and hear the other this is completely separate to the sim program. My Bluetooh headset had that capacity automatically so if you took it off it muted the sound but it could not manage the MS changes to sound or properly mix the mutli wave scripts from the sim.

One possibility is to tailor the .wav files that define your cockpit and environmental sounds by subduing them to sound more normal with the audio optimized for the engine sound.  You can use a program like Audacity to edit the .wav files and change levels, filter out bass etc.  It's a bit tedious, but it can be done.

Also, some add-ons use external sound interfaces for some sounds, e.g. Doug Dawson's DSDSound, so dealing with sounds implemented that way will be different than sounds invoked through the P3D sound system (defined in the sound.cfg file).

Dang. Well, thank you so much for the detailed explanation!

That one I do know about: Under Windows/Sound/Communications selecting the radio button for "Do Nothing" for the "When Windows detects communications activity". Gotta love MS/Windows for their arrogant assumptions as to choosing options that are "best for us".
