BAe 146 and Avro RJ differences - (Part 2) ...

Featured Replies

[I continue, here, my (pictorial) inquiry into BAe and RJ aircraft...albeit from a layman's (virtual) perspective....]

Here are few of the primary differences between the Bae 146-100 (the first and shortest BAe) and Avro RJ100 (the last and longest RJ) variants, featured, in my 2 (B2B) posts, for relative comparison.

  1. First of all, the 146-100 cockpit is fully analogue (see flightdeck shots, in my Part 1), in fact, it might remind you of resemblances to the (original series) Boeing 737-200 cockpit.
  2. The avionics of the RJ sports a much-improved flight deck, featuring (PFD/EADI), improved annunciations, and (ND/EHSI) with display formats (MAP/ROSE etc.) controlled by the EFIS Control Panel which is, curiously, but conveniently, placed just below the FMS (see [VC] Pedestal Shots, below). The 146-100 had the (old-style) ADI and HSI displays without EFIS support. Notice also that the analog (steam) gauges of BAe 146 have been replaced by digital counterparts in the RJ cockpit. (Note: The BAe 146-300 did introduce some modern features in its cockpit.)
  3. The 146-100 has a (basic) GNS-XLS FMS whereas the RJ100 features the (advanced) GNLU910 FMS (See close-up pictures). The GNS-XLS gives you LNAV but no VNAV, it has however, an "Advisory VNAV" page (see FMS shot in Part 1), that one can use for (manually) controlling the vertical speed and descent (it's fun to use too), whereas the RJ's GNLU910 FMS has full VNAV capability (which is an FMS function that's a rarity among Regional Jets) and is similar to that found on modern jetliner FMSs.
  4. The RJs have FADEC engine control system, and, significantly, also the Autothrottle (or A/T) control (compare the MCP close-up shots of the 146 vs. RJ), and the RJ's MCP layout appears similar to that of Modern (longer-haul) jetliners. In my Landing/Touchdown shots (see below), the A/T Speed Control of the RJ performed really well, making this virtual RJ Pilot's life so much easier...here...🙂.... climaxed by the deployment of the Lift Spoilers (on the Wings) and the (peculiar but spectacular) Airbrakes (on the Tail cone) ... [Note: The BAe/RJ did not have Reverse Thrust system.]
  5. The RJs are powered by the (next evolved series) LF507 engines that are fitted with FADEC support, instead of the ALF502 series, used on the BAe 146. These engines are otherwise similar (see close-up shots of engines).
  6. Etc.

And, for the airline of choice, here, for my RJ100, I've selected "BA Connect". This LCC (that was a pioneer in many respects), was purchased by British Airways in 1993, and in November 2006, British Airways announced the sale of BA Connect to Flybe, into which, in March 2007, this airline would finally lose its individual identity. BA Connect was a major (146 and RJ) operator, with 17 examples in its fleet (4 BAes and 13 RJs, all RJs been the "-100" variant, that you see in the pictures below).

The RJ 100 pictures, in this collection, belong to a sequence of takeoff/landing shots at EGCC (Manchester Airport), which was one of the primary hubs of operations...for "BA Connect"...

Thanks for viewing...!!

Great shots! 😉

Well done! We have a 146 from 32 Squadron preserved here near Cardiff, Wales 🙂.

And part two is also very worth seeing..

Awesome article and shots.  You explain the avionics very well.  I wonder if there's one available in MSFS?

Jack: Thank you. These days anyone with on-line resources can be a self-certified expert in almost anything...🙂...but that's where the limitations are from RW experience.... BTW, I know you've worked plenty in Boeing machines, not sure, if you ever had close contact with this type, anyway, I believe JF is progressing towards an RJ for MSFS...the pictures (so-far) look wonderful, you'll like that one, when available...

No sir, never worked these cool little planes.  I love the steam cockpit but hate the old INS nav avionics, it was always a pain for us and the pilots.  I remember when we removed them all in the L-10's and went with a standard FMS.

I'll have to do some looking into the JF one as I seldom like to search for things, it's just the way I am.  I've never been big on searching and some people I know absolutely go apoplectic that I don't search like they do.
