July 26, 200718 yr >>Wow-no fms-no gps-just guts and headwork! Those were real>pilots and heros!> Amazing. And you know in the Pacific theater, they had all of those tiny islands to navigate from and to......I read one account of PBY pilots from back then, and it said they would fly x number of minutes, over y amount of time, and at that point they *expected* to see their destination island. If they did not see anything after flying that amount of time, they flew 10 minutes further (depending on the visibility and airspeed), scanning the horizon all the time. After 10 mins, they would initiate a turn 90 degrees (perpindicular) to their present heading, fly for 10 minutes, scanning the whole way. If still nothing, then turn 90 degrees again, fly for 10.Eventually they crossed back over their original flight path, and they kept flying straight. In this way they kept box patterns going with progressively larger lengths, with the hope that they would find the island. If not, into the drink.I did this in FS one time and it was fun trying to find the island. It was Easter Island, too, so I was glad I found it, because there isn't much else out there around it.RhettAMD 3700+ (@2585 mhz), eVGA 7800GT 256 (Guru3D 93.71), ASUS A8N-E, PC Power 510 SLI, 2gb Corsair XMS 3-3-3-8 (1T), WD 150 gig 10000rpm Raptor, WD 250gig 7200rpm SATA2, Seagate 120gb 5400 rpm external HD, CoolerMaster Praetorian Rhett 7800X3D ♣ 96 GB G.Skill Flare ♣ Gigabyte 4090 ♣ Crucial P5 Plus 2TB
