How important is this 7900XT(X) advantage over 4800 ?

Recommended Posts

And by that I mean the amount of VRAM 24(20) vs 16 for 4800. Over at the Flight1 hardware forum Nick has advised me that size of VRAM is important for flight sims and I also think he advised us to get a videocard with 24 Gb VRAM for MSFS. So advantage AMD more VRAM lower price and advantage for NVIDIA 4080 raytracing and DLSS. Which is best for MSFS DCS XP P3D5 ?

You can forget MSRP the few showing up are above the MSRP and in the UK some at £1,300

I see 13000 SEK listed for a 7900XTX today. That's about 130$ and taking account of TAX 25% it would be fairly close to MSRP. The cheapest 4080 I see is 16500 SEK. So yes AMD has a price advantage.

If your not using 4K then it would be cheaper to use the last gen GPUs at 1080p the 6900 XT will give you the same and at rock bottom price now.

But I use VR with MSFS DCS XP P3D with a HP Reverb G2. My monitor is 2560*1440.

I was checking on availability this morning and the scaplers cleaned out Newegg and Bestbuy as soon as they hit. In a way I am kind of glad they did. Right now with a 5800x3d and a 6800 XT I can run all Ultra 200/200 at 50% of my monitors refresh rate, 167, so get just over 80 fps in "most" places, in 2K, 2560x1440. That is my monitors max resolution. My mind tells me that the 7900 XTX is a waste of money for my system, but I stll kind of want one.

And I have ordered a 5800X3D system. But I run my sims in VR with HP Reverb G2. I doubt that I can go overkill with the video card in such a case.

That's impressive.  With my 12700K at 4.5 GHz and my old 1080 ti I only had about 45 fps at 1440p.

With the new 4080 I've got triple digits with frame gen enabled outside of big cities.  Maybe a little overkill haha.

But not really as I also use VR (that being said FG does not yet work in VR).

I'd definitely get the 4080 or 7900xtx in that case.  MSFS is showing a bit better performance at higher resolutions right now but frame gen does not work in VR.  (Yet)

I forgot to add that is running with FSR 2. Before they enabled that I was using FSR 1 at the driver level with basically the same results. I do admit I don't fly Tubes into big cities so that may contribute to my FPS.

Is there any advantage pairing an AMD GPU with an AMD CPU? Or does it not really matter?

I just upgraded to an AMD 7900X CPU, but still running my old 1080TI.

Trying to decide between a 4080 or 7900XTX, running at 4k.

Both are good cards.  The 4080 has a little more perf in msfs but costs more.

But are there any benefit for the AMD card because it is placed in a AMD CPU system ? Will you get more out of a AMD GPU in AMD CPU system than if you place it in a Intel CPU system ?

Also been thinking about 7900XTX having double VRAM compared to 4080. Why is then 4080 slightly better in MSFS ? Is it different in other flight sims ?

Regarding cost is there a chance that the 4080 prices drops 7900 levels any time soon ?

I'm not a hardware expert but as I understand it the 4080 has faster vram and would consume a bit less.  It's not quite half though.  My 4080 has 16GB and the xtx has 24.

That reminds me I want to see my GPU usage in VR not exactly sure how to view that.  Maybe dev mode would work.

Oh about your other questions - I do not think there is a secret benefit if you go all AMD vs a mixture etc.

Yes, Dev Mode FPS view will tell you, as will OXR Toolkit Advanced Overlay on the Performance menu.
