Are they deliberately keeping 4090 in short supply? If so, what do they gain from doing this?

a) Very likely.

b) Profit.

The GPU market has crashed following the latest crypto bubble bursting. There is now an excess stock of GPUs, which would normally make unit prices drop like a rock.  Significantly, this price level is below the amount Nvidia had budgeted for when planning their RTX 4000 series product line. This adversely affects their profit margins and subsequently the dividend payments to executive board members and shareholders.

Whereas, maintaining a restricted supply creates an artificial shortage, so prices can be kept artificially high. This means profit levels are maintained.

Wonder if the USA's FTC would consider investigating?

Here in Australia (can only speak to my part of the world in Melbourne) getting your hands on one isn't that hard at all. I visited a couple of IT stores over the weekend and all three had 4090's on the shelf and have had for weeks. Now admittedly the stores are asking more than the MSRP - the Gigabyte OC Gaming was equivalent of $2100 USD at three stores.

To be honest it doesn't look like this card is anywhere near as in demand as the previous 3090's etc.

Under the agreement with NV AIB partners are required to one FE base version at MSRP once sold. The AIB partners can sell custom GPUs at whatever MSRP they wish.

PS 4090s are available in the UK and have been for some time.

They were gone in an hour or two. I'm seeing stuff pop up online but it gets picked up fast.

That's crazy!  Hopefully in 2 months when I build, the market will calm down somewhat

(heh, I'm laughing at my statement)

AMD hasn't really put any pressure on nvidia on the high-end, so nvidia can do whatever it wants with supply and pricing of 4090's.  I'd love to have a waterblocked 4090 for that price or lower.  My old 1080ti was water cooled, and I really liked that setup.

I've been using this site to help find in-stock 4090's.  Has been pretty accurate although you are still stuck trying to beat bots to the purchase.
