DX11 and VRAM OOMs in MSFS

Featured Replies

Hello,

Using P3Dv4(!!!) analogy, am I correct that in MSFS DX11 mode, VRAM OOMs aren't possible as the burden is on CPU's shoulders. I've completed 9 flights in MSFS with Fenix/PMDG/3rd party sceneries/PSXT traffic and had zero (knock on the wood) issues,  even though MSI gauge constantly shows 10.7GB in use with my 2080Ti (12GB).

Would appreciate clarification.

I'm not sure what happens when you exceed VRAM, but I do know MSI's OSD does not display actual VRAM in use by the sim, FWIW.  For example, right now flying into LFPG and MSI shows 8.8Gb in use, whereas MSFS DevMode OSD shows 7.1Gb.  Certainly have never had any kind of 'error' or problem when VRAM has approached all of my 12Gb--but I'm using DX12.

I believe DX11 will use normal, slower RAM when VRAM usage is exceeding.
This of course leads to slower FPS.

But maybe someone with more knowledge could correct this if I'm wrong.

I don't think it has anything to do with the CPU, but other than that you are correct.

I also have a 2080Ti. Mine has 11GB of VRAM. Most of the time, it shows nearly all of it in use when MSFS is running. Same for GPU utilization. Almost always in the 95-97% range. Right where I want it.

OOM crashes are truly a thing of the past. After a few weeks, you'll be able to forget that there ever were OOM crashes on final and focus on your flying. Welcome to the "new" reality. 🙂
