Are you also fed up with slow AI traffic?

Featured Replies

One thing I used to appreciate in the simple days of FS2004 was flying enroute, sometimes for hours on end, with other AI traffic as company, who happened to be going somewhere similar to me. Granted they flew great circle back then rather than along proper routes, but at least it was possible.

With FSLTL loaded (and previously with AIG) I find the AI traffic flies so ridiculously slowly at altitude (~230kts ground speed) that you just end up overtaking everyone and never have anyone to fly with. It didn't used to be the case with native Live Traffic in MSFS (but I'm led to believe it is also the case now?)

There's a bug ticket related to this on the MSFS forums: https://forums.flightsimulator.com/t/ai-traffic-still-cruising-at-slow-speeds-around-200kts/556256

If this bug annoys you too, please vote in that forum thread! As of writing, there's only 18 votes so far.

Funny enough, I encountered this last week. I could see a plane in front of me and it came at me with such speed I thought it was flying the other way but it wasn't. It was on exactly the same track but a little below me and I just blew past it. It was another 737-800 and I reckon I must have been going 200kts faster than it was. It was just wrong.

🤣 And as I say that it just happened again. This time 3 aircraft all at once I just blew past. All pretty close together and I just shot past them at about 150-200kts faster. All 737's again. Well, at least 2 of them were.

You can still use AIFlow https://en.flightsim.to/file/42731/aiflow to fix this problem.

I just overtaked same flight three times. It just disappears and then reappears in front of me. 231 kts for him.

Ahh, you beauty! Thanks - that worked a treat just now. Didn't realise it also fixed enroute traffic behaviour. But still, let's vote and get this fixed properly 😉

I recently had the best plane spotting experience with AI only traffic yet using FSLTL, AIGround, and AIFlow at Inibuilds KLAX.  It was not perfect, but was the closest Ive had yet with an AI only solution.  I have and do use PSXT for similar purposes and its great, but since it isnt AI and doesnt respond to user aircraft, I was still interested to see what could be achieved with AI - even in its compromised state on account of the redesign needed from Asbobo.

I watched from my drone camera inside the tower (which is decently detailed in the inibuilds version) on a mid afternoon on a Saturday.  I had my plane tuned in to one of the tower frequencies.  You could hear the discussion between the tower and incoming and outgoing planes and it did a pretty decent job.  Most of the arrivals were properly assigned the outer runways (24R & 25L), cargo went to 25L. and departures on the inner ones (24L, 25R).

PROS

- decent amount of landings (see cons below).  MOST planes landed in fact, probably 75% if I had to guess

- no spinning planes

- planes taxied at a decent rate and cleared the runway quickly (for the most part)

- performance was decent enough (I do push max settings on 13900k/4090 so this is on me a bit - getting 27-29fps in VR with Ultra settings 100IFR,20VFR, 60parked, and the GA mod for additional GA planes at surrounding airports)

CONS

- there were still some go arounds for various reasons

. some were caused by GA aircraft that shouldnt be there.  Currently asobo's GA traffic flight plans for things like Cesna's still include major airports like                  LAX for some reason

. some were an occasional plane that was too high or too low (which i thought AIFlow was meant to fix, but somehow they still got through)

.  still more were unexplained - i.e. i couldnt see any reason why they should go around, esp since the plane was only 50-60' off the runway when the go                   around was triggered

- some LAX specific issues... since planes generally land on the more distant of the two parallel runway sets, taxiing planes have to cross their infield parrallel runway at somepoint.  When there are a lot of planes taking off, the system gives 100% priority to those taking off which results in the recently landed planes waiting for quite a while to cross.

- on other very rare occasions, a plane would seem to get forgotten completely.  FSLTL will automatically delete a plane that has been stuck for a user specified period of time.  I saw some cases where it seems that FSLTL did that, but the simobject was still there.  Other planes would just pass through it as if it werent, and the plane never moved.

Those things aside I think right now the combo of FSLTL, AIGround, and AIFlow give some pretty reasonable AI traffic for the time being while we wait for Asobo to fix the base system.  All AI solutions do have an FPS hit, so expect to reduce settings until you find something that works.  There is something really nice to the immersion, however, once you do have it right where you can fly into an airport with the ATC system responding to both you and the AI traffic in a cohesive fashion.
