HUD or No HUD

Featured Replies

I now have a HUD in the 737-600. I had one years ago in the Majestic Q400, and in the 737 . I used it a couple of times, and preferred to just fly looking out the cockpit window. Wondering how many use the HUD, if your aircraft has one?

There's an excellent series of new YT videos by 737ng Driver that looks in some detail at the correct operation of the HUD. It starts with this overview

and then goes on to address the correct usage of the HGS in various phases of flight, including instrument and visual approaches. Remarkably, it's possible to use this system for manual control of ILS approaches all the way down to Cat 3A minima. Amazing!

Personally I never use it, though I’m sure if I gave a it a try for a few flights I’d get used to it.  I just prefer the clear view of the runway...a bit old school I guess.  I know it does have some really helpful benefits for visual approaches though.

I use it on and off but prefer a clear view of the runway. That said after Emi's videos I might give it another shot!..

I enjoy using the HUD. Helps to grease those landings!
