February 26, 20233 yr Spare parts from the shuttle carriers got used for the SOFIA B747. https://simpleflying.com/shuttle-carrier-parts-usage-nasa-sofia/ The Roswell airport (KROW) is also a boneyard. We have a lot of cycled out airliners here. Roswell got the FAA's permission to close one of the three runways to use as aircraft storage. And a company here takes the useable parts and sells them. A number of years ago my friend who was the president of the Roswell Little Theater wanted to replace the seats in the Little Theater. I went with him to that hangar where the useable parts were being sold to see if the seats removed from those airliners could be used for the theater. But they were priced to high for the theater's budget. But going through that hangar and seeing what was for sale was most interesting. The engines had already been sold before they were removed. But seats and instruments and other parts were on display. Interestingly enough this is the same hangar the alleged dead aliens were brought to after the alleged UFO crash in 1948. The owner who rents that hangar from the city said when they first went into the hangar a couple of the hangar had been walled off with bricks. They tore down the bricks and found an empty office that had wood and glass walls. They are now using the space as their own office. There was no explanation of why that office was walled off. Noel The tires are worn. The shocks are shot. The steering is wobbly. But the engine still runs fine.
February 26, 20233 yr Moderator Interesting information, Noel. Did you know that one of Elvis' jets was also a resident of the boneyard there? A fellow recently purchased it at action for $330k. I'm not sure what he has planned for it, but it must be removed soon... Fr. Bill AOPA Member: 07141481 AARP Member: 3209010556 Avsim Board of Directors | Avsim Forums Moderator

I was just going to mention the same thing. $250,000 he paid for the wrecked jet. Don't think it was $330,000. Jimmy's arranging for an inspection of the jet to see if it can be restored to full flight status.
February 26, 20233 yr Moderator Jimmy the Jerk, who wasted so much money on this decrepit jet. Sourcing engines will be a major issue, since they are currently unobtanium. The originals are in a museum. Assuming that there is an STD for equivalent engines, he's looking at many millions of dollars each. Several millions more to replace the missing equipment in the cockpit, and who knows how much more to get it flightworthy. I don't anticipate a happy outcome for this project. Fr. There seemed to be a lot of bidders last time. He's very wealthy from what I understand. I'm wondering if the museum have said they'll part with the engines.
February 27, 20233 yr Author Oh yes, I saw it many times back when I was flying. I would always ask for intersection H for runway 35-17. That was the midpoint of a 9,999ft runway. Either way I had plenty of takeoff space for a Cessna 152. The taxiway to intersection H passed right next to it. The Elvis jet looked old and decrepit way back then. I often wondered why it hadn't been scrapped despite the fact it had belonged to Elvis. Or maybe sent to Graceland as a gate guard for the entrance. Noel The tires are worn. The shocks are shot. I've searched everywhere using Google, and I see NOTHING regarding this Roswell airport. Stan Edited March 4, 20233 yr by 188AHC
March 1, 20233 yr Author I don't know of anything either Stan. There are about a dozen Orbx enhancements for New Mexico airports including Cavern City Airport (Carlsbad) and Sierra Blanca (Ruidoso). If you ever happen to run across anything for Roswell, let me know. Noel Edited March 1, 20233 yr by birdguy The tires are worn. The shocks are shot. The steering is wobbly. March 3, 20233 yr Okay... total cost to get airworthy, $5.7 million. 😄 And that's the best case scenario. But... because its so noisy, it would require a hush kit, and no hush kit is made for this aircraft. 😁 So basically it can't ever fly. To fly it would cost $10,000 per hour in just fuel. March 3, 20233 yr Author Some people just want to own something that once belonged to a celebrity. People buy clothes worn by actors and actresses. Or a car driven by Steve McQueen. A dull green 1968 Ford Mustang GT driven by Steve McQueen in the movie “Bullitt” just became the most valuable Ford Mustang ever sold at auction. It went for $3.7 million, including auction fees, at the annual Mecum collector car auction in Kissimmee, Florida. I'm sure whoever bought it isn't planning to drive it to the supermarket.
