New System - Mainboard for 13900K

Recommended Posts

Hi there…

till today, I run the following system with MSFS 2020:

Prozessor (CPU): i9 9900 KS; 5,00 Ghz (edited)
Arbeitsspeicher (RAM): 32 GB DDR4 3600 MHZ CL16
Mainboard: Z390 Aorus Xtreme
Netzteil: BeQuiet Dark Power 1200W
Gehäuse: Thormax
Grafikkarte: RTX 4090
HDD / SSD: 1x 500 GB M.2 SSD; 1x 1 TB M.2 SSD
3 Beamer Optoma HD29HST
Windows 10

Since last week, I run MSFS with my homecockpit over a 180 degree curved screen with Immersive Display. My FPS dropped to 15 FPS …
So I plan to sell my system and go for an Intel i9 13900K, 32 GB DDR5 7200 MHZ, Z790 Mainboard.

I know, that this question is nonsense, but do you think I can get satisfying FPS with this updated system compared to my actual system?

And another question…. if I go for a 13900K, which mainboard can you recommend? I think about Gigabyte Z790 Aorus Master or ASUS Z790 Hero Maximus. The aorus master is quite cheaper than the Hero Maxiumus. Or is there a thing I have to observe?

Thank you really a lot for your help!

Christian

Before upgrading, there is one obvious anomaly with your current setup. You show a 9900KS at 4 Ghz which is way below what it is capable of.

Given reasonable cooling, the 9900 KS should run comfortably overclocked at 5 Ghz and probably 5.2, which would give a significant increase in performance. Although it's an older processor, it was one of the very best for consistent stable overclocking. Then with your 4090 and minor adjustments to MSFS settings you should be able to get adequate fps and save a lot of money.

It‘s my fault…

I already run my 9900ks at 5,00 GHz.

Best regards…

Consider an ASUS ROG Strix Z790-E WiFi. It's highly recommended. I got one and I'm very happy with it.

A bunch of the new Z790 mainboards incorporate the bugged Intel i-226V LAN adapter, which has a problem where it intermittently drops the connection every 3-5 minutes.  I'd look for a board that uses a different LAN device, or at least includes a second Realtek or other LAN device.

Rumor has it that the Realtek is as bad or worse.

Experiences vary greatly depending on speed and what's on the other end. I'm hooked up to a D-Link switch and typically only have the connection toggle during system boot.

If going for a new build, what would you recommend? I am going to go with the 7950x3d or the 7800x3d from AMD. Thank you

I have no experience with AMD CPUs/motherboards...

I'm using a Netgear gigabit switch.  Forcing 1Gbps or 100Mbps and/or disabling EEE reduced the frequency, but did not stop the dropouts.

My workaround was to use an external USB-to-Ethernet adapter that incorporates a 1Gbps Realtek device.  No dropouts since.

What device are you using? (I might have to get myself one if I find dropouts become an issue!)

Edit: never mind. I see there are hundreds of them on Amazon for almost nothing capable of 1G bandwidth.

@Bob Scott I notice you haveWD SN850X in your system. WD released a firmware update a few days ago which addresses a bug they've had for several years. You need the Western Diyital Dashboard to upgrade:

The one I have is a USB-C to ethernet adapter I got at Best Buy for $20.

Thanks...I'm waiting until I do my next full backup before messing with the SSD firmware.
