New Laptop for PMDG 747 ???

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I soon will be doing a lot of travelling and will spend a lot of time in hotel rooms. 🥲

Am thinking of getting a new gaming laptop mainly for Prepar3d v5.0 and the PMDG 747. Also want to hook up a tablet to use as a wireless CDU.

What spec of laptop do people recommend to get it running smoothly?

Best Regards,

WB

AMD Ryzen 7 5800x,  RTX4090, Varjo Aero, 32GB 3600MHz RAM , Samsung 980 Pro 1TB PCIe4.0,  980 1TB PCIe3.0, TUF B550M-PLUS (WIFI), Warthog HOTAS, Saitek PRO rudder pedals,  1440p Ultrawide, Track IR, TM Boeing yoke.

I used to use old i5+1050 laptop on P3Dv3 with PMDG777 when I did a lot trave, not super smooth but works.

Now I got one with gen11 I7 and 3050, haven't played with PMDG but I have once doing some test with P3Dv4+FSL320, with mid graph setting and no scenery add-ons it's just fine with around 30 FPS then.

In 2D cockpit or VC?

My current laptop (specs in signature) can run P3Dv4 with the FSLA320 (but VC disabled, just 2D, as in the good old days) as long as it's connected to the charger, but barely at 24-30 FPS (because I abused from AI). I never tried v5 there (because I don't have enough licenses).

Just make sure the GPU meets the FSL recommended specs (6500 Passmark points, 6GB VRAM), and the CPU base speed is enough to meet the specs (8000 Passmark points). I say base speed, because Turbo Boost is useless for sims. The hardest part might be getting a laptop with 6 GB VRAM, and light enough to be carried in your backpack.

I say FSL, because it's heavier than the 747. Anyway, get an external mouse for your laptop.

Main rig: self built, AMD Ryzen 7 5700X3D (with SMT off and CO -50 mV), 2x16 GB DDR4-3200 RAM, Nvidia RTX 5060Ti 16GB, 256 GB M.2 SSD (OS+apps) + 2x1 TB SATA III SSD (sims) + 1 TB 7200 rpm HDD (storage), ID-Cooling SE-224-XTS air cooler, Viewsonic VX2458-MHD 1920x1080@120-144 Hz (G-sync compatible), Windows 11. Running P3D v5.4 (with v4.5 scenery objects as an additional library, just in case), FSX-SE, MSFS2020, MSFS2024 and even FS9! Lossless Scaling for all my sims. What a godsend...

Mobile rig: ASUS Zenbook UM425QA (AMD Ryzen 7 5800H APU @3.2 GHz and boost disabled, 1 TB M.2 SSD, 16 GB RAM, Windows 11 Pro). Running FS9 there .

VKB Gladiator NXT Premium Left + GNX THQ as primary controllers. Xbox Series X|S wireless controller as standby/mobile.

Another thing to watch out for is the screen resolution--a 15" 4k display on a laptop is as big a load on the GPU and VRAM as the 55" 4K display I run on my desktop sim.  The smaller display size makes super-high resolution unnecessary, and a standard HD or perhaps UHD (1440p) display will allow for much better performance.

Thanks very much guys for the excellent tips.

I'm looking to use the virtual cockpit on the PMDG 747.

After some research I'm now keen on this https://www.ign.com/articles/new-release-asus-rog-strix-g16-geforce-rtx-4060-gaming-laptop-amazon

Also the 4060 laptop GPU (16709 passmark score) for MSFS will be able to use DLSS 3.0 frame generation, which should be decent enough on its 1080p 16" screen. The Intel Core i7 1365HX should have a passmark score of around 30,000.
