McMurdo to Mount Erebus

Featured Replies

This is what Wikipedia has to say about Mt. Erebus: it is the second-highest volcano in Antarctica (after Mount Sidley), the highest active volcano in Antarctica, and the southernmost active volcano on Earth. With a summit elevation of 3,794 metres (12,448 ft), it is located in the Ross Dependency on Ross Island, which is also home to three inactive volcanoes: Mount Terror, Mount Bird, and Mount Terra Nova.

The volcano has been active since about 1.3 million years ago and has a long-lived lava lake in its inner summit crater that has been present since at least the early 1970s.

The volcano was the site of the Air New Zealand Flight 901 accident, which occurred in November 1979.

Behind the summit is a small plateau, where I can try to land

I think it was worth it. Do this in real life and it’s going to cost you a fortune. 😉😉 Let’s get out the bubbly for the passengers

Ok, time to head back to McMurdo

But where are we going to sleep, I don’t like to sleep in a 40-foot container!!

No worries, ma’m, we have already thought of something much, much better

I hope this will satisfy you 😉

Think the ice fields are only for the ends of the season,  when the pack ice closes in.

There are lots of issues down there, not least the compass!
I chose the Beaver for this, and never got beyond 1000ft. before the carbs iced and dumped me in the bay.

Williams Field adjacent Scott Base is the more stable platform, sad that the scenery was not developed beyond the wind turbines, it's not as if there is anything else for the next 1000km!

Fantastic Bernd.  I didn't know so many people lived there.

Luckily I didn't have any such issues. I once read that one of many possible factors could be reduced power settings, which make engines more prone to icing.
